Summary

Rise of the Roninis an upcoming action-adventure RPG by Team Ninja, developers of hit titles like theNinja Gaidenseries andNioh. Like Sucker Punch’sGhost of Tsushima,Rise of the Roninwill take players to an open world set in feudal Japan. However, this story will allow them to create a custom Ronin character and will take them through historic cities such as Edo, Yokohama, and Kyoto. Judging by the developer’s past titles, players can expect a challenging experience, but there will be plenty of features in the game that are considered uncharted territory for Team Ninja.

Rise of the Roninhas been deemed Team Ninja’s most ambitious title yet, as it brings with it a host of features the developer is not known for. While not every one ofRise of the Ronin’s features may have been revealed yet, enough has already been disclosed about the game to set expectations reasonably high for its March 22 release.

All Features Confirmed for Rise of the Ronin So Far

Rise of the Ronin Has a Choice-Driven Narrative

One ofRise of the Ronin’s most marketed features has been its choice-driven narrative, as this alone makes the game unlike anything Team Ninja has done before. According to the game’s official website,Rise of the Roninfeatures a “rich multi-choice system” that plays into the rogue nature of the Ronin character the player will be in control of. Players will be given opportunities to decide whether to kill or protect certain characters at key moments in the story, which could result in potential allies.

Rise of the Ronin Features an Open World Set in Feudal Japan

Rise of the Roninhas been compared to Sucker Punch’sGhost of Tsushima, almost justifiably so, for its similar combat and feudal Japan open world. A feature that setsRise of the Roninapart fromGhost of Tsushima, however, is that its open world will take players through various citiesGhost of Tsushimaplayers were unable to visit due to being stuck on Tsushima Island.

Rise of the Ronin Features Diverse Combat Playstyles

One of the major highlights ofRise of the Roninis its combat.Rise of the Roninfeatures diverse combat playstyles by allowing players to fight up close, from range, or a combination of the two. ThoughRise of the Ronin’s is often compared toSekiro: Shadows Die Twicein its Soulslike combat, Team Ninja has avoided referring to its upcoming RPG as a Soulslike, although it may still be difficult.

Rise of the Ronin’s close combat features three different combat styles, much likeGhost of Tsushima’s stances. In close combat, players can use a Katana, Bayonet, or Spear. The Katana is used for more fast-paced, close-quarters combat, whereas the Bayonet can be used as both a ranged and a close-quarters weapon. The Spear, on the other hand, swings in wide arcs and can deal AoE damage.

InRise of the Ronin’s ranged combat, players can use an array of Boshin War firearms, like a Bow, a Flamethrower, and a Pistol. Additionally,Rise of the Ronin’s gliderallows players to fire from range while in the air. Players will also be allowed to combine playstyles by using both close combat and ranged combat weapons simultaneously.

Rise of the Ronin Will Feature 4-Player Co-Op

Team Ninjarecently revealed thatRise of the Roninwill feature a 4-player co-op mode. Unlike other Soulslike games likeElden Ring, which allows players to summon other players to their aid during certain moments, it sounds likeRise of the Roninwill allow co-op at all times.

Outside of co-op, though, players will also be able to swap between the protagonist and their AI companion seamlessly.

There are presumably plenty of other features inRise of the Ronin, but that much will likely be made known once the game releases on March 22 or in any additional dev diaries that come out before then. At the very least,Rise of the Roninis already shaping up to be a unique experience.
