The Mystery of the Thirteenth Tribe
The Thirteenth Tribe comprised humanoid Cylons, who originated from Kobol and were an evolutionary offshoot of the mechanical Cylons initially created by the humans of Kobol. Accompanying them on Earth was a distinctive model of robotic Cylon, with only the discovery of a buried helmet as evidence.
During their time on Kobol, both the Cylons and their creators had advanced resurrection technology. Over time, the memory of the twelve tribes creating Cylons faded, leading to the misconception that the Thirteenth Tribe was just another faction of human origin. This misunderstanding also extended to Earth, as both the Thirteenth Tribe and their destination were regarded as mythical by many among the Twelve Colonies.

Interestingly, the majority of Cylons were unaware of their connection to the Thirteenth Tribe and believed that this tribe had been entirely human. It wasn’t until the revelation of Earth that they uncovered the truth about their shared ancestry and the genuine nature of the Thirteenth Tribe.
Throughout the pursuit of the Thirteenth Tribe, pivotal episodes emerge, each casting a revealing light on this cosmic enigma. In the first season’s installment, “Kobol’s Last Gleaming,” Commander William Adama and President Laura Roslinstumble upon ancient scripturesthat offer insights into Earth’s whereabouts. These texts not only lay out the path to Earth but also underscore the significance of unearthing the Tomb of Athena—an important artifact bequeathed by the Thirteenth Tribe.
The search gains momentum in the third season’s episode, “Rapture.” The discovery of the Tomb of Athena leads the fleet to a planet named the “Algae Planet,” where a beacon stands as a guidepost toward Earth. As the fragments of this intricate puzzle interlock, it becomes increasingly apparent that the Thirteenth Tribe’s odyssey has been chronicled through a tapestry of symbols, writings, and relics deliberately left behindfor the Twelve Colonies to decipher.
The Thirteenth Tribe Revealed
The long-awaited revelation regarding the Thirteenth Tribe’s true identity is unveiled in the fourth season’s pivotal episode, “No Exit.” Within this installment, thehistory of the Final Fivecomes to light—a distinct group of Cylons intricately connected to the Thirteenth Tribe’s exodus. Roughly two millennia before the catastrophic downfall of the Twelve Colonies, a rebellion surged among the Life Form Nodes crafted by the Thirteenth Tribe. The consequences were dire, culminating in a devastating nuclear apocalypse that wiped out the planet along with its inhabitants, including the Centurions.
Remarkably, the Final Five, comprising Saul Tigh, Ellen Tigh, Tory Foster, Galen Tyrol, and Samuel Anders, managed to evade annihilation by transferring their consciousness to a vessel housing their reconstructed resurrection technology in orbit. This resourcefulness enabled them to assist the surviving Centurions from the Twelve Colonies in erecting a novel Cylon society.
However, their efforts were thwarted when they weremurdered by Number Oneand reloaded into new bodies furnished with fabricated memories. For an extended period, the Five existed as “humans” without any inkling of their authentic identities, until mere months before their rediscovery of Earth.
The journey through their recollections and experiences unveils a revelation: the Thirteenth Tribe’s civilization had confronted its own internal strife between human and Cylon factions. This disclosure underscores the cyclic nature of conflict and raises profound queries about the genuine essence of humanity, the complexities of artificial intelligence, and the pivotal choices that mold the trajectory of their fates.
Upon the malevolent assault by the Cylon “offspring” that led to the annihilation of the Twelve Colonies, the Final Five found themselves plunged intoyet another nuclear devastation, although this time they managed to survive without the need for downloading. Contrary to the Cavil Cylons' expectations, none of the Five perished and resurrected.
Galen Tyrol and Saul Tigh were aboard the Galactica during the attack, while Samuel Anders was engaged in high-altitude survival training. Tory Foster miraculously survived a blast near Delphi, and though seriously injured, Ellen also survived an explosion on Picon, with Cavil, interestingly, aiding her rescue. He believed she hadn’t fully grasped the lesson he intended, hence his intervention to ensure her survival until that insight was gained.
A curious recurrence was noted during the onset of the attacks. Both Ellen and Anders uttered the phrase “this has happened before,” hinting at fragments of their past resurfacing. Ellen even experienced fleeting memories of herself and Saul on Earth before their previous deaths. However, she seemingly lost recollection of this in later events, as demonstrated in the 2009 movie,The Plan.
Anders, after sustaining a gunshot to the head, had his memories reinstated. Unfortunately, post-surgery, he entered a quasi-vegetative state and ultimatelytransformed into Galactica’s Hybrid, impeding his ability to effectively convey the knowledge he had acquired. The Five managed to reunite and joined forces to confront the enemy Cylon forces. This culminated in a decisive conflict that resulted in the obliteration of The Colony, the vessel that had ferried the Five from Earth and functioned as the central Cylon hub.
During this battle, Galen Tyrol took the life of Tory Foster, driven by her murder of his spouse. Subsequently, Samuel Anders, piloting the Fleet, heroically plunged into the sun of the new Earth, resulting in his demise. Following these losses, only three authenticremnants of the Thirteenth Tribeendured until their eventual demise, presumably from natural causes.
With the obliteration of the Resurrection technology and the passing of Anders, Foster, and the remaining Five, their deaths became permanent.
This signified the end of the Thirteenth Tribe’s lineage inBattlestar Galactica. Nonetheless, the descendants of the Cylons and humans on Earth could be perceived as a form of legacy, as the Five had a hand in the creation of the Cylons who settled on Earth.
