Comedy anime are like the genre’s hidden gems. With the popularity of English language comedic animated shows likeRick and MortyandBig Mouth,anime is often a second thought for fans of comedy in the animated genre. But, comedy anime English dubs are there to satisfy those who want more hilarious animated content without the subtitles frequently associated with watching anime. Some English dubs, however, take away from the jokes that were originally written in Japanese, making the shows less funny. Luckily this is not the case for some series, and they retain all the humor and gags.

10Life Lessons With Uramichi Oniisan (2021)

Uramichi Oniisan is the star of a children’s show involving young kids, similar toBarney & Friends. He should be helping kids sing their ABCs, but instead he gives out very adult, existentially fueled, life lessons. He talks to the kids like they’re adults, but in a forced cheerful voice. It’s pretty dark and sarcastic, but due to the irreverent and honest nature of the comedy, the jokes land in English just as well as they do in Japanese. This anime uses the same narrator asFullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood,Kent Williams, and features voices from Ray Chase and Eric Vale.

9Mob Psycho 100 (2016-2022)

This show is known for its incomparable art and its exquisite animation, but it’s also laugh out loud funny. It follows Mob, orShigeo Kagayama, a psychic that fights evil spirits alongside his shady master, Regan. While it’s more of an action shonen anime than a comedy, which is why it’s so low on the list, the comedic aspect ofMob Psycho 100is underrated.

With voice actors like Kyle McCarley, know forKomi Can’t CommunicateandSpriggan, as well as Chris Niosi, known forBlack Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, this dub is almost as good as the original.

8The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. (2016-2018)

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.is the story of an overpowered psychic teenager, similar toMob Psycho 100,but it’s total satire. It pokes fun atthe overpowered hero trope, showing the difficulty one would have if they were actually a super psychic living among normies. This dub features the voices of Jerry Jewel, known forFruits BasketandDr. Stone, as well as Tia Lynn Ballard, known forFairy Tail.

7Prison School (2015-2016)

This is an ecchi comedy rated for mature audiences for nudity and sexual content. It tells the story of a small group of boys that get into a newly co-ed boarding school. It uses crude humor and sexual innuendo for its laughs, but it is nonetheless hilarious.Prison School’sEnglish dub uses the voices of Sonny Straight, known forDragon Ball Z,and Kristen McGuire, known forGenshin ImpactandOshi No Ko.

6Nichijou - My Ordinary Life (2011)

Nichijoutakes the “cute girls doing cute things” trope and turns it into “cute girls doing totally wacky things”. Thiszany slice of lifeanime follows a group of girls and one robot mom as they go through school and home life. It is cute, but it’s also deceivingly hilarious. Featuring the voice of Monica Rial, known forMy Hero AcademiaandDragon Ball Super,Nichijouis sure to satisfy fans of wholesome comedy.

5Assassination Classroom (2013-2016)

When a tentacle clad mastermind attacks the moon, the government makes a deal with him. He will teach a class of delinquent students how to kill him, and in return whoever kills him gets “10,000,000,000”. It’s a unique premise with loads of laughs and even more heartfelt moments.

4Ninja Nonsense (2004-)

Ninja Nonsenseis a classic comedy anime, and the dub is worth watching despite its age. It follows Shinobu, a student ninja as she attempts to learn how to be a ninja at ninja school. It is the perfect combination of crude and wholesome comedy that is sure to make fans laugh out loud.
