Better Call Saul’s sophomore season saw some major developments for theBreaking Badprequel. Relationships were strained after the conclusion of season one, where progress on the Sandpiper class action lawsuit pushed Chuck to admit to having been the one blocking Jimmy’s growth at Hamlin, Hamlin, & McGill. Chuck’s outburst got in Jimmy’s head, causing him to skip a meeting with another firm, Davis & Main, who was prepared to offer Jimmy a job due to his work ethic and relationship with the Sandpiper residents. Instead, Jimmy reminisced with Mike Ehrmantraut, vowing to never again make the mistake of doing the “right thing”.

While Jimmy’s legal and personal battles intensified, as did his more nefarious activities. Jimmy and Mike continued to be pulled into debauchery by the Salamancas as the drug-running family called in favors and made messes that had to be cleaned up to protect Jimmy and Mike’s reputations. Despite Kim’s suspicion and concern of Jimmy’s relationship with his criminal clients, it’s undeniable that Jimmy gets a degree of pleasure from the close calls and elaborate heists that come with being on the wrong side of the law. Jimmy’s separate worlds of legitimate lawyer and crooked counsel become even more intertwined inBetter Call Saul’s second season.

What Happens inBetter Call SaulSeason 2?

Despite Jimmy’s seemingly firm decision not take the Davis & Main job, season 2 finds him working there while things heat up between him and Kim. Kim takes a big step towards Jimmy throughout the season by leaving HHM and starting an independent practice in her and Jimmy’s shared office space. Kim is adamant that they are professionally independent aside from sharing the space, but their connection strengthens when they con a rich businessman into buying them excess amounts of incredibly expensive liquor. The two were just blowing off steam, but are a bit surprised at just how much fun they had running a scam.

Early in the season, HHMrelegates Kim to document reviewout of frustration of her closeness with Jimmy. Kim manages to secure the firm a huge new client, Mesa Verde Bank, but HHM takes the Mesa Verde case without acknowledging Kim or moving her out of the basement, prompting her to quit and open her own practice. This prompts a fierce and slightly underhanded battle between her and HHM as both fight to retain Mesa Verde. Despite the toll it will take on his electromagnetic sensitivity, Chuck visits the HHM office to attend meetings in which he undersells Kim’s competence, securing the case for HHM.

Jimmy, meanwhile, struggles with the boring, cushy, corporate life at Davis & Main. He comes under fire from his boss, Cliff Main, after making a successful but unsanctioned TV ad for the Sandpiper case, encouraging residents to call in. He is clearly an outlier among the other lawyers in the firm, and his approach to life just doesn’t mesh with the stiff procedures of corporate law. While he wants to quit, he learns that if he does, he will have to reimburse his signing bonus back to the company. So instead, he forces the firm’s hand with minor irritants until they fire him, much to Kim’s discontent. Jimmy is persistent about wanting to partner with Kim, but she declines once again after asking him if he was going to"play it straight" or be “colorful”.

There’s no point in me doing this if I can’t be myself. Every time I try to do something someone else’s way, it blows up in my face. That’s what happened at Davis & Main. Look how that turned out. I almost derailed your career, pissed everyone off. I’ve been trying to be the person someone else wants me to be for… I don’t know how long. I mean first it was Chuck, then it was you… and that’s not your fault. That was my choice. But if we’re gonna do this, I gotta go into it as me. So yeah. Colorful, I guess.

Kim tells Jimmy that he has her in his life, just not as a partner in law. Nonetheless, their romantic life blossoms, as does their mutual penchant for scams. This, paired with Jimmy’s falling out with Chuck, causes him to take matters into his own hands as he tries to earn Kim the Mesa Verde case back. He steals some of Chuck’s casework files, alters a date, copies the documents, and returns them to Chuck’s portfolio without him noticing. The error causes a serious delay, which has its intended effect: the clients choose to return to Kim. Yet Chuck suspects foul play from Jimmy.

How Does Better Call Saul Season 2 End?

Chuck’s suspicion of Jimmycauses him to cover his tracks, and in the season’s penultimate episode, he revisits the copy center where he printed the altered documents. When he arrives, he sees Chuck’s intern, Ernesto, talking to the clerk who helped him. The clerk, himself suspicious of the questions, doesn’t give Jimmy up. Once Ernesto leaves, Jimmy pays the clerk for his continued discretion. He then waits nearby, convinced that Chuck will muster the strength to enter himself- which he does. However, the electromagnetic forces in the bright copy center prove to be too much for Chuck, who faints, hitting his head on the countertop and knocking himself out.

Despite knowing it will blow his cover, Jimmy rushes to his brother’s aid. Chuck is brought to the hospital where he undergoes tests, leading his doctor to suggest thatChuck be admitted for psychiatric care; his electromagnetic sensitivity is a mental condition, not a physical one. Jimmy refuses the extreme power he’s offered over his brother, instead honoring Chuck’s wishes to be discharged and released to his electricity-free home.

After things have settled down, Chuck confides in Jimmy that his mistake in the Mesa Verde documentation has him worried that his condition is affecting his mental state after all. He goes so far as to say that he no longer trusts himself as a lawyer, and is retiring. Jimmy wanted Kim to have Mesa Verde, but not to end his brother’s career, so he rushes to Chuck’s house and admits to doctoring the paperwork himself. The series ends on Chuck’s revealing a tape recorder after Jimmy leaves; he preyed on Jimmy’s concern for him and recorded the entire confession.
