Even for a game that’s been out for a couple years likeCall of Duty: Black Ops 4, there are stillEaster eggs players are discoveringin-game and sharing with the community. Reddit user JackalBoy88 just discovered and solved one such Easter egg on one of the Zombie Maps, and it’s making a lot of users excited.
The user found the Easter egg onBlack Ops' Voyage of Despair map (found inZombies mode), and wasn’t able to find any evidence of it being uncovered online already. Jackalboy88’s post describes looking closely with sniper scopes at an unusual bird atop the Forecastle’s mast. The bird is easier to see with Cartoon Mode on when the player is standing on the right side of the bridge, facing toward the front of the ship. The user proceeded to try a number of actions with the bird, like shooting it with different weapons.

JackalBoy88 had almost given up, but triedapplying the Pack-a-Punch utilityto the Kraken explosive and shot at the bird using the Kraken’s elemental variants. The bird disappeared, and the user spent the next few days searching the map and looking for anything unusual, finally stumbling upon a cipher-encrypted book next to the Zeus Perk Altar. Since the user is a frequent map explorer, it seemed odd that the cipher was unfamiliar.
The cipher reads “Oesysh.nnrtooatdceeu ltr.e.r.d.uf.a.aidloy..reo yrogNer..?uao..ys..nw a.ot.wg..Wua,” and was identified as a Scytale Cipher with a “band of 10” that was solvable after being rearranged into different letter blocks. Once decoded, the text reads “Once.you.were.a.gangster..Now.you.are.a.soldier..What.do.you.truly.stand.for?…,” although the user asks in the post for “cipher buffs” to confirm this. JackalBoy88 says although the reward was small, the process of hunting and decoding was worth it.
This isn’t the firstEaster egg users have found on Voyage of Despair. In fact, many of the Zombie Maps are known for containing Easter eggs that players are still finding now. The post comments were full of people congratulating JackalBoy88 for the hard work put in to solving the Easter egg and cipher, with multiple people expressing gratitude that the Zombies community has people willing to put so much time and dedication into the game.
WhileCall of Dutyfans are well-known for their commitment to uncovering secretsand Easter eggs, players like this one go above and beyond when they’re willing to spend hours of their time repeating the same action over and over again and rearranging seemingly-nonsensical text for the simple joy of discovery. Players this devoted to their game and sharing the cool stuff they find are what make online gaming communities so engaging for many people.
