The producer of theBravely Defaultseries, Tomoya Asano, is hinting that a remaster of the first game is possibly in the works. This hint was dropped during a tenth anniversary celebration stream of the first game, and by extension the whole series.Bravely Defaultfirst released on the Nintendo 3DS in Japan under the subtitleFlying Fairyin 2012 before getting an international release across all regions in an updated re-release in 2013. It received generally favorable reviews, being favorably compared to thejob-basedFinal Fantasygames, along with a rich narrative and memorable characters.
The sales success ofBravely Defaulthas led to a variety of follow-up projects using the series' name, including a direct sequel known asBravely Second, along with an entirely different sequel set in another universe withBravely Default 2for the Nintendo Switch. Despite Asano’s success with the JRPG and going on to form Team Asano within Square Enix, the game that started it all is still stuck on the 3DS. A recent comment from the producer however seems to indicate a remaster might be coming in the future.

During the tenth anniversary stream forBravely Default, Tomoya Asano alongside other members of Square Enix, proceeded to show off a high-resolution version of the game’s iconic opening, where it introduces all four heroes of light and the party members that the player will be utilizing. This includes Agnes Oblige, Tiz Arrior, Ringabel, and Edea Lee, along with their fairy companion Airy. Upon the conclusion of the movie, he said “I feel like announcing a remaster of [Bravely Default:]Flying Fairywould be the best possible thing and something fans would desire. But for now I’m unfortunately unable to announce anything like that.”
During the stream, Asano then stated that this was reservation was a “for now” situation, hinting that there may be a remaster for modern consoles. He also noted that the team has grown quite a bit in the last ten years, and that the capacity of what they can do has also increased. The stream also discussed a variety of other games that Team Asano has been hard at work developing. This includes other JRPGs such as the upcomingOctopath Travelersequel, along with recently released games such as the PC port ofTriangle Strategy.
Some players really want both the originalBravely DefaultandBravely Secondto be ported from the Nintendo 3DS to the Nintendo Switch, considering they’re both still locked on the console. Some fans did raise concerns over Square Enix porting the games to the Switch or other consoles, considering the unique dual-screen setup of the original and how some features of the 3DS that were used in these games won’t be utilized. Regardless, this statement should be taken with a grain of salt until an official announcement is made.
