Summary

Bungie has detailed its plans for Gambit inDestiny 2as it looks forward to Season 22, the launch ofThe Final Shape, and beyond. Gambit is a competitive game mode introduced in theForsakenexpansion that has proven to be somewhat controversial. There areDestiny 2players that adore Gambit, while others would prefer if Bungie removed Gambit from its requirements for weekly rewards. Bungie has, up to this point, been dedicated to making Gambit a core part ofDestiny 2, but that appears to be changing soon.

Destiny 2’s Gambit mode sees two opposing teams battling both directly and indirectly. Players begin by battling AI enemies, gathering and collecting the motes that they drop. A player can invade the opposing team at certain mote thresholds, directly attacking players and disrupting their efforts. A match ends after defeating a Primeval, summoned after gathering 100 motes. Gambit also features a variety of weekly rewards for playing, as well as its own Infamy progression path with exclusive weapons and armor.

In the latestDestiny 2State of the Game blog, Bungie talks about the current state of Gambit and its plans for the game mode’s future. It first acknowledged that it hasn’t talked much about Gambitsince its overhaul whenThe Witch Queenlaunched. Bungie says the overhaul didn’t improve player engagement with Gambit. As such, Bungie says it’s focusing its resources on more popular parts ofDestiny 2. Gambit will be less of a focus for Bungie moving forward.

While Gambit won’t be the priority someDestiny 2players would like to see going forward, it isn’t being abandoned entirely. A “few updates” are planned for the year ofThe Final Shape. Planned updates include the addition of the Shadow Legion and Lucent Hive as Gambit enemy types. Thecurrently removed Cathedral of Scars mapwill also be ported to the latest version ofDestiny 2. It’s not much, but it’s something for Gambit fans to look forward to.

For those happy to hear Gambit is being scaled back, there are further changes to look forward to. Gambit will see a reduced number of Seasonal Challenges starting with Season 22, which starts in late August. Weekly Challenges will allow players to forgo Gambit entirely. And for those still wanting to venture into Gambit, a new Fireteam Matchmaking system will be replacing the Freelance node for faster matches even withfewerDestiny 2players queuing up.

As popular asDestiny 2continues to be, not every mode can retain a sustained number of players. Gambit was an interesting idea mixing PvE and PvP elements, but players ultimately appear to have decided they’d prefer to play either PvE or PvP content instead. Gambit isn’t going anywhere, though. It’ll be available throughDestiny 2’s final expansion. It’s just no longer a priority for Bungie.

Destiny 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
