Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is an admittedly ambitious and expansive title, launching alongsideWarzone 2and featuring its own comprehensive singleplayer and multiplayer modes. Despite the scale of the title and the fairly comprehensive amount of content that it offers, many are of the opinion that the game is already suffering from a lot of burnout, especially within its core multiplayer experience.
These criticisms were partially quelled recently with the launch ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Season 2 on February 15, which brought with it new modes, maps, weapons, and playlists. While the launch of Season 2 was a welcome one, there is plenty of potential content that has still not been implemented in the game, with the continued absence of the Gunfight game mode being at the forefront of player requests.

Call of Duty’s Gunfight Mode
The Gunfight game mode was first introduced to theCall of Dutyfranchise withinthe multiplayer of 2019’sModern Warfare, and the popularity of the mode came from the truly unique nature of it. Gunfight sees two teams of two players face off against one another in symmetrical and intimate small-scale maps purposefully made for the mode, in which each player has one life and health cannot be regenerated.
Each team is given identical loadouts which change every round, with a round being decided by a team being completely eliminated or by which team captures a late-spawning objective flag. The small team sizes and permadeath nature of Gunfight makes it and inherently competitive gameplay experience that requires a significant level of team communication, with the high-stakes bragging rights of Gunfight games reminding many of the classic back-and-forth banter thatCoDmultiplayer has historically fostered.

Gunfight’s Absence in Modern Warfare 2
Following the intense success of Gunfight inModern Warfare, the mode has gone on to feature in bothCall of Duty MobileandBlack Ops Cold Warto equal levels of popularity. Given the consistentpresense of Gunfight in the more contemporary lanscape ofCall of Duty, many assumed that Gunfight would be included at launch within the recentModern Warfare 2, especially given how the mode debuted inModern Warfare 2’s2019 predecessor.
Despite this great level of fan anticipation,Gunfight was absent fromMW2at launch, and it was recently confirmed that Gunfight will not be implemented during Season 2 of the game’s multiplayer.Black Ops Cold Warintroduced Gunfight within its very first in-game season, which makes the continued delay of the mode’s implementation toModern Warfare 2all the more confusing and divisive.
Call of Duty: Vanguardhad a similar mode to Gunfight at launch in its Champion Hill mode, further exemplifying the gameplay utility of the Gunfight formula within modernCall of Duty. A recent announcements regarding Gunfight’s addition toModern Warfare 2confirmed that the mode will arrive with the game’s Season 3 at the earliest, meaning fans still have to wait some time to experience the mode withinCoD’smost recent title.
Given howModern Warfare 2is already experiencing the aforementioned criticisms of burnout and a lack of core multiplayer variety, the lagging of Gunfight’s addition to the game is understandably confusing fans. While the eventual addition of the mode will surely be met with joy, many cannot help but feel that a serious opportunity has already been missed to bolsterMW2’s content with the mode in Season 2.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
