Cyberpunk 2077just wrapped up its most recent Night City Wire Livestream, announcing a hugePhantom Libertyexpansion coming in 2023 and Update 1.6, which will be the last prominent patch for PS4 and Xbox One. It doesn’t look like last-gen will be getting any majorCyberpunk 2077expansions either.
Update 1.6, titled the “Edgerunners Update,” brings a slew of new content to fit into the upcomingCyberpunk EdgerunnersNetflix anime. Players will be able to wear the same yellow jacket worn by David Martinez from the show and equip a new weapon also featured in the anime. Additionally, there appears to be a new quest and playable character tying into the show, which will likely be where players can find the jacket and weapon. Notably,Cyberpunk 2077’s Update 1.6will also add a transmog feature where players can change the appearance of their clothing while retaining the same stats from a different piece of gear.

However, CD Projekt Red has confirmed thatCyberpunk 2077’s “Edgerunner Update” will be the final big patch for PS4 and Xbox One consoles. This comes as a significant loss, seeing as the studio has also announced that in the future,Cyberpunk 2077will receive completely overhauled policeand vehicle-to-vehicle combat systems. At launch, both of those systems received a lot of flak, and now one of the most requested fixes for the game will be exclusive to current-gen console owners. On top of that, last-gen users will also miss out on the upcomingPhantom LibertyDLC, which promises to expand into a new part of Night City.
CD Projekt Red has always had a troubled history withCyberpunk 2077and last-gen consoles. When the game launched in late 2020, many critics and fans quickly noticed how inadequately it performed across both PS4 and Xbox One citing unplayable frame rates and constant crashing issues. The extent ofCyberpunk’s problemswas enough for Sony to pull the game from its storefronts for multiple months until the studio patched out its most prominent issues.Cyberpunk 2077on last-gen consoles is in a much better state now, but it seems like CDProjekt Red would naturally pull out of last-gen development at some point, given its persistent struggles across both systems.
The Polish studio certainly isn’t alone in cutting ties with last-gen consoles and shifting focus to the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Much likeCyberpunk 2077,Final Fantasy 7 RemakeandDeath Strandinghave also released expansions that are exclusive to the PS5 and include updates that last-gen consoles can’t access. At some point, the focus for game development should be on what’s most modern, but with the continued scarcity of PS5 and Xbox consoles, it doesn’t seem like this transition will be an easy one to stomach.
