The Occultist is capable of tremendous damage inDarkest Dungeon 2for those who have the patience to master the character. At the start, the hero is a bit underwhelming, depending on stacks of a unique token, Unchecked Power, to get access to his most powerful moves.

Those who stick with the Occultist will find thatDarkest Dungeon 2has made him one of the strongest damage dealers in the game. He is capable of burst melee and ranged damage and a heal that can take a hero on Death’s Door back up to almost full health.
Skills
It’s critical for the Occultist to get two stacks of Unchecked Power as quickly as possible. The Burning Stars is one of the hugest hits in the game and requires it. Plus, the healing from Wyrd Reconstruction is much better once theskill has been upgradedand two stacks of Unchecked Power are achieved.

To get these two stacks, place combo markers with Weakening Curse and Daemon’s Pull, then cash in on them with Sacrificial Stab. Binding Shadows would also work, but it moves the Occultist forward and into harm’s way so think build goes with Sacrificial Stab.
Path
Aspirant is intended for melee-first builds in exchange for making curses less effective. Warlock is a good choice, decreasing maximum health for an increased chance of a free Unchecked Power stack each round and extra ranged damage.
The only drawback to Ritualist will be turned into a positive by a trinket. The benefits are numerous, adding a litany of potential buffs when using Weakening Curse. It also increases the Occultist’s enormous healing potential and makes the Curse less likely to be resisted.
Trinkets
The Ritualist will occasionally give a Vulnerable debuff to the Occultist but the Indelible Seeing Sapphire automatically converts this debuff into a stack of Unchecked Power. Additionally, it gives a 66% chance of applying a negative token to an enemy grabbed by Daemon’s Pull.

The obvious drawback to any build with the Occultist is that the hero sets himself on fire frequently. The stack is only one, but the damage will add up. To counteract it, grab a trinket like the Indelible Heat Shield to resist the burn application. Between these two trinkets, the Occultist suddenly becomes ofthe best heroes in the game.
Combat Item
Each charge of WIlbur’s Flag willa dd a combo token to an enemy. Use it, then attack the enemy to get a stack of Unchecked Power one round earlier than normal. This is crucial in boss fights that are often vicious if they drag on for too long.
Teammates can help out on the healing end.A perfect Plague Doctor buildcan clear fire damage from the Occultist, making him an excellent teammate. Get some tanks up front and the Occultist can almost single-handedly take on the damage responsibilities with The Burning Stars.
