Summary

During its weekly blog update, Bungie announces major changes coming to the Crucible when Season 23 ofDestiny 2arrives later this month, including new rotating modes, rewards, and playlist changes. The Crucible has been a point of contention for many players over the past couple years, with most saying the mode needed a refresh and an influx of new content. Thankfully, players got their wish asDestiny 2game director Joe Blackburn revealed a Crucible strike teamhad been formed to focus on improving the game’s PvP side.

Some of the strike team’s planned changes are set to arrive later this month alongside Season 23. In an effort to improve the overall player experience, Bungie announced a handful of Crucible changes, including adding a new game mode called Sparrow Control, which essentially takes the Multiplex map bug and turns it into an actual game feature. Alongside that, Bungie revealed theDestiny 2Season 23 ritual weapon is a heavy void caster sword called Chivalric Fire, which can be earned via Crucible or through other playlists like Vanguard and Gambit. However, the post also included a number of major playlist shakeups as well.

In this week’sDestiny 2blog, Bungie’s Crucible Strike Team announced a number of planned changes, including the reintroduction of the 3v3 Quickplay node which prioritizes connection and latency while rotating through Elimination and Showdown, while Rift has been removed. It’s also worth noting that Trials of Osiris will take over this node when it appears over the weekend as well. Similarly, Bungie is also adding a 6v6 Quickplay node that now consolidates the Relentless and Party nodes into one category, while a 6v6 Unranked option will also be available that features variations of the Control mode and will be taken over when thenew Season 23 Iron Banner is active.

What else is Changing with the Crucible?

In addition to those changes, Bungie also confirmed a number of tweaks coming to the overallDestiny 2Crucible experience, including continued tweaks to map spawning and further tuning to matchmaking and skill systems through the player’s confidence rating per playlist. The Competitive Division is making adjustments to rank, removing any emphasis on performance and instead focusing on wins and losses. Promotion and Relegation requirements are also being removed for everything except Adept and Ascendant. Finally, Trials of Osiris adds small weekly rewards based on the number of wins the player gets prior to suffering a loss.

Bungie closed out the blog by introducing a brand-new way to focus gear, unique mechanics that have been gradually added toDestiny 2for a variety of vendors including the Gunsmith. For Season 23, players can focus all retired Competitve rewards from Lord Shaxx and his Legacy Crucible menu. Unlike other focusing options, players will need to complete placement matches and are limited to a weekly number of focuses based on the highest rank the player has achieved so far that season. Since Bungie is giving players access to what it refers to as the most reliable weapons inDestiny 2, the cost to focus will be high at 3 Crucible engrams and 25,000 Glimmer.
