Summary

Ever since the introduction of Vegito in the Majin Buu Saga ofDragon Ball Z, fusion has been an aspect of the series that most fans look back on as one of the best additions in the series. This is mainly because the very concept of fusion takes two fan-favorite characters andmerges their powers and personalitiesinto a completely new being who is vastly stronger than both of the characters that made him in the first place.

As the Z-Fighters were fighting Super Buu, we first saw this concept embodied in the form of Gotenks, and then again when Vegito was born due to the Potara Earrings and went on to defeat the most powerful form of Buu that we had ever seen. After this, fusion was shown again inDragon Ball Z: Fusion Rebornwhen Goku and Vegeta merged using the Fusion Dance. Ever since then, there has been a never-ending debate about who the stronger fusion is, so let’s break it down.

Vegito

Vegito was born the first time Vegeta and Goku ever fused, and he was the product of fusion via Potara Earrings. As Super Buu had absorbed Ultimate Gohan and took his own power beyond that of a Super Saiyan 3, Goku knew that the only way to overpower Buu was to fuse with Vegeta, adding their strengths into one completebeing who was called ‘the perfect warrior’.

As Vegito was born, he had the power to easily defeat Buu as he was merely toying with him for their entire fight, even in his base form. After he transformed into his Super Saiyan form, the difference in power became so astronomical that Buu started to genuinely experience fear, running away and even causing tantrums due to him not being able to deal with such an incredible power gap. However, Buu was still able to turn Vegito into chocolate and eat him, putting a sudden end to their fight as thefusion wore off inside his stomach. Whether or not this was part of Vegito’s plan was never truly explained, though this allowed Goku and Vegeta to save everyone else.

Vegito in Dragon Ball Super

The next time we would see Vegito was in the Goku Black/Zamasu arc inDragon Ball Super, where nothing that the heroes were throwing at the villain seemed to be doing anything to him, leading toGoku and Vegeta fusing into Vegito Blue. With his new godly transformation unlocked, Vegito greatly damaged Zamasu, but the fusion ran out due to the sheer amount of energy it was using up.

What makes Vegito special is that his power doesn’t only come from adding that of Goku and Vegeta. The Potara Earrings come with an extra buff called the ‘Rival Boost’, which essentially adds their powers together, and then magnifies the resulting power by a certain percentage due to the competitive rivalry between them. As for how he acts, Vegito is an entirely new being with a unique personality, though it is more influenced byVegeta’s cocky and ruthless attitudeas it can also be heard in his voice and seen in his fights.

Gogeta

In theFusion Rebornmovie, we saw Vegeta and Goku fuse once more, this time using the Fusion Dance to merge into a fighter named Gogeta. After being outclassed and beaten by Super Janemba,Super Saiyan 3 Gokuproved to be ineffective, leading to him and Vegeta having to fuse once more in a transformation that shook entire dimensions.

Though Goku was handling himself well enough against Janemba’s first form, he was then found to be incapable of beating Super Janemba, an enemy able to teleport, open portals and use extremely powerful Ki blasts. However, Gogeta’s own screen time is very limited as he only appears in the last 10 minutes of the movie where he can quickly and easily annihilate Janemba in a few hits. As soon as he came onto the scene, he threwhis most powerful attack, the Stardust Breaker, which obliterated all the negative energy, successfully defeating Janemba.

The next time we would see Gogeta is in2018’sDragon Ball Super: Brolymovie, where the titular character is introduced and is shown to be far stronger than either Goku or Vegeta, causing them to fuse into Gogeta. This time, Gogeta gets far more screen time and defeats Broly without even really breaking a sweat once he goes Super Saiyin Blue.

In both of the movies, Gogeta is far more serious than his Potara Earring counterpart, wanting to get straight into the action and not wasting any time to defeat his opponent. Gogeta, just like Vegito, is a completely new character whose entire personality is essentially a mix of Goku’s and Vegeta’s though this time, the fusion leans more into Goku. This is seen in his seriousness and his compassion, which is seen at the end of both movies as he looks to a brighter day with a smile.

So Who Wins?

In a battle between the two Saiyans, the answer of who would most likely win may not go the way you would think. This is because, until 2018, Gogeta was not even a canon character, as allDragon Ball Zmovies are considered to belong to a different canon of their own. At that stage, all we knew of the fusion dance was that the stronger of the two participants had to lower their power level to the others' level, as seen whenGoku tells Trunks and Gotenabout it.

This led to most people considering the Potara Fusion to be the overall stronger one, however,Dragon Ball Superretconned this. Much like the Rival Boost, the Fusion Dance also adds the power of the participants and then, adds another percentage of power on top of that as explained by Gogeta as he enters the battlefield. This means that this aspect of the Fusion Dance may too have been silently retconned, putting Gogeta and Vegito at the same level.

Gogeta Blue in Dragon Ball Super Broly

In terms of abilities, both Fusions are theresult of Goku and Vegeta. So, this means that they both have virtually the same move set and, being the same power level, they wouldn’t be able to out-muscle each other either. They are effectively the same character but with different personalities.

The only caveat to this match-up comes in the time of each Fusion. In the Majin Buu Saga, it was told that Potara Fusion is permanent and it was largely assumed that the Fusion itself was broken up due to Buu swallowing Chocolate Vegito. However, inthe Goku Black arc, it was revealed that the transformation is only permanent for Kai’s and for mortals, it would last 1 hour. However, due to Vegito’s incredible power, the Fusion split before the hour was over.

Vegito and Gogeta (Super Saiyan Blue)

This is where Gogeta is at an advantage. The Fusion Dance is meant as a temporary fusion that lasts 30 minutes no matter how powerful the Fusion is, so if the fight were ever to happen, Gogeta would likely come out as the winner due to Vegito’s time limit running out before Gogeta defuses. In terms of sheer firepower and ability, they are evenly matched, but Gogeta can only be the winner based on time constraints!
