Marvel Studios’Secret Invasionfeatures a star-studded cast that includesGame of ThronesandStar Warsalumn Emilia Clarke in a mystery role. Of course, Clarke is bound to the same secret oath all MCU stars appear to take after joining the universe, but the actress offered insight into why she wanted to be part of the Disney Plus project.
While details onClarke’sSecret Invasionrolewere not divulged when news of her joining the series broke, the prevailing theory is that she will be playing one of the presumably multiple Skrulls who invade Earth undetected. If the comic book version of theSecret Invasionstory is any indication, Clarke’s character could be a threat to the planet if she is indeed playing a Skrull, but so far these theories remain unconfirmed by anyone at Marvel Studios.

Of course, fans of Clarke’s work were likely unsurprised when they learned that she signed on to star inSecret Invasion,especially considering her most famous roles to date are Daenerys Targaryen inGame of ThronesandQi’ra inSolo: A Star Wars Story. So, while it seems Clarke is naturally drawn to science fiction and fantasy projects, she recently revealed that she wanted to join the Marvel Studios team because she believes their “cutting edge” work makes them the Apple of the film and television world. “To be part of that family feels like, ‘Oh my god, I’m in the cool kid crowd. That’s so cool,'” Clark said during an interview with ComicBook.com. “Honestly speaking, the people that are making this are what pushed me over the line to really wanting to do it. I just think that everyone’s heart and heads are in the right place with this one.”
Having said that, fans who assumed Clarke is a fan of these epic fictional projects wouldn’t necessarily be mistaken. The Emmy Award-nominated actress explained that she grew up reading fantasy fiction andthe Spider-Man comicswere the first origin story she remembers reading as a child, though she’s pretty sure Superman was her first introduction to the world of superheroes as a whole. Despite being a fan of these works, Clarke admitted that she was unaware of just how massive the fandom was until she entered the convention scene. The fact that a given IP is now the star of Hollywood blockbusters these days, as opposed to the actors, does not escape Clarke either.
Clarke isn’t just diving into the world of comic books from behind the camera with her role onSecret Invasion. In April,Clarke announced she is co-writingher first superhero comic book series,M.O.M.: Mother of Madness, for Image Comics.
The comic series may ease the anticipation for Clarke’s MCU debut inSecret Invasion, which has yet to begin production and almost certainly won’t be available to stream in 2021. When the Marvel Studios series does premiere, however, Clarke will have plenty of company in fellow MCU newcomers Olivia Colman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Carmen Ejogo, andHappy Gilmorestar Christopher McDonald.
Secret Invasionis expected to be released on Disney Plus in 2022.
