This past weekFall Guysre-launched as a free-to-play game and in doing so reworked the party game’s monetization and progression systems.Fall Guysstill has its seasonal battle pass, but it has added daily, weekly, and long-term Challenges to encourage players to log in day-to-day. However,Fall Guysplayers are growing frustrated with the new progression systems, even going so far as to say that in some cases it’s more rewarding to lose matches than to try and win.

The problem appears to be rooted in the fact thatFall Guysbattle pass progressionis now built around its daily and weekly challenges, while standard progression has been nerfed into the ground. That means completing a daily or weekly Challenge can progress players one or multiple levels through the battle pass. But ifFall Guysplayers don’t complete a Challenge, or have already completed their Challenges, then they receive a trickle of progression.

One user on Reddit called attention to just how little battle pass progressionFall Guysplayersearn under the new free-to-play system. User hold_my_cocoa linked how much they earned in a match if they lost in the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth rounds, as well as when they won a crown. Losing in the very first round earned them 24 points, while winning the fifth and final round won them 107 points. In other words, repeatedly losing the first round earns points faster than winning.

While it may be ridiculous that losing five times in the first round could net 120 points versus winning five rounds in a row for 107 points, there’s a deeper problem to acknowledge. Regardless of how players earn points, whether it’s 120 or 107 or less, progression is astonishingly slow. If going from level 10 to level 11 costs around 500 points, that meansFall Guysplayers have to win a crownfive times to gain a single level. Alternatively, that’s 21 losses in the first round at 24 points apiece.

It’s easy to see whatFall Guysis trying to do, of course. If daily and weekly Challenges offer significant progress in the battle pass, while playing for extended periods of time doesn’t, the game’s priority is getting players to come back every day even if it’s just for one or two hours. If players aren’t doing that,Fall Guysisn’t rewarding them.

Whether changes will be made toFall Guys' new progression systems isn’t clear. Routine patches addressing feedback for a live service game are common, but there are no indications of change at this time. As afree-to-play game,Fall Guys' continued success depends on retaining players, so even if the system is “broken” changes may not be made. Only time will tell.

Fall Guysis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
