Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxyis an excellent action game with a combat system that is leaps and bound better than 2020’sMarvel’s Avengersgame. This time, the story is at the forefront of the action. This focus has allowed the developers at Eidos Montreal to create a surprisingly fun and complex combat system that borrows elements from theMass Effectseries andFinal Fantasy 7 Remake.

Thankfully, the combination of colorful visuals, great characters, and the cinematic storyline resulted in good reviews from fans and critics alike. As a result, the game’s early success willlikely secure a sequelin the future, and more Marvel games from Square Enix will follow suit.

The Stagger Mechanic

An exciting feature of the combat system inGuardians of the Galaxyis theStagger mechanic. Some of the game’s larger and more challenging enemies will have a “Stagger Bar” next to their health meter. Without staggering these enemies, some enemies will take little to no damage at all, but once that bar has been filled, it’s time for the Guardians to unleash their special moves on the enemy. When an enemy is staggered, their Stagger Bar will flicker in combat.

Staggering Enemies

To stagger an enemy, the player needs to unlock and use these abilities for combat. It’s one ofthe earliestGuardians of the Galaxyfeaturesthat players will get to grips with. Additionally, if a Guardian uses an element that an enemy is weak to, this can also trigger the stagger feature. These stagger abilities also have a rating that the player should pay attention to to ensure that the best available skills are being used in the right situation.

Stagger Abilities

Each Guardian has its own Stagger abilities that will need to be unlocked with the earned Abilities Points accumulated throughout the game’s story. These abilities are as follows:

Eye of the Hurricane

Star-Lord, Groot, and Gomorra fighting enemies

3 Ability Points

Heavy Stagger damage is dealt on to enemies on the battlefield when he has the high ground.

Glowing Pains Grenade

Light stagger damage will hit multiple enemies. However, its area of effect will weaken other enemies on the battlefield too.

Stagger Wave

A wave of energy that hits enemies with moderate stagger damage to her main target and the target’s teammates behind them.

Mammoth Grab

Moderate stagger damage will be dealt on to enemies. It can hold down several enemies at once.

Destroy

Starting Ability

Drax’s first ability in the game deals heavy stagger damage to one target at a time.

Katathian Charge

2 Ability Points

Drax charges at enemies in a single line damaging multiple opponents at once with moderate stagger damage.

Pound and Pummel
