After being infamously delayed until 2021, just before the launch of Microsoft’s latest console, the Xbox Series X/S,Halo Infinitestole the show at this year’s E3 with an impressive amount of info and announcements. In addition to giving closer looks atHalo Infinite’s multiplayer and campaign, the E3 presentation revealed there will be a Spartan Academy. The academy utilizes bots and is designed to help new players handle the game’s fundamentals and new tools or for players to warm up with before entering an online match.
While the existence of an academy for Spartans is somethingHaloveterans will find familiar, a new face will be in charge of training: Laurette Agryna. The Spartan Academy Commander, a Spartan herself, is tasked with training the fourth generation of super-soldiers. At the same time, Master Chief and other UNSC forces attempt to stop Cortana on Zeta Halo.
One of theEaster eggs in theHalo Infinitemultiplayer trailerreveals the actual name of the academy to be the Avery J. Johnson Academy of Military Science. As longtime fans of the series should be aware, Sergeant Major Avery J. Johnson is a Marine in the pastHalotitles that leads UNSC forces to battle against the Flood and Covenant in the Great War. The heroic Johnson was tragically killed by 343 Guilty Spark during a mission inHalo 3. It appears that the Sergeant is gone but far from forgotten in theHalouniverse, given the honor of being the moniker of the training grounds for humanity’s best defenders.
The Spartan Academy is just one facet of the wide array ofHalo Infinitecontent that looks to buck the trends of other triple-A shooters.Halo Infinitewill have cross-play at launch, along with zero loot boxes and a unique battle pass system. Each season’s battle pass becomes permanently available once released and can be progressed through indefinitely. Beyond that, the game allows players to purchase older battle passes, eliminating any fear of FOMO,somethingDestiny 2players are certainly jealous of.
Although plenty ofHalo Infinitedetails were revealed during E3, one glaring omission was a concrete launch date. The game currently has a “Holiday 2021” release window, meaning it’ll be another few months before the full game is released. The key phrase in that last sentence was “full game,” as aHalo Infiniteplayable technical test is coming this summer.
