The past few years have been a wonderful time to be aSpider-Manfan. Between his introduction into the MCU, a smash hit animated film, and Insomniac’s critically acclaimedMarvel’s Spider-Man, everyone’s friendly neighborhood webhead has been swinging higher than ever before. Excitement around the character has been especially high for the past week, now that the first trailer forSpider-Man: No Way Homefinally released, and many fans are counting down the days until the film premieres in theaters. While the film is exciting enough on its own, it could mean even bigger things for the sequel toMarvel’s Spider-Man.

Marvel’s Spider-Mandid an excellent job at setting up a sequel, with the tease ofVenom appearing inSpider-Man 2being the biggest sticking point for many fans. Now that the multiverse is being introduced inNo Way Home, it’s not a stretch to think that Insomniac could go all in on bringing its own version of the multiverse into the world ofMarvel’s Spider-Man. The series has already taken a number of risks as far as introducing experimental new plot lines is concerned, and there are more than enough inspirations to take to ensure a multiverse inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2is everything fans could hope for.

Spider-Man 2 Could Take Multiverse Inspiration From Comics

When it comes to comic book video games, there are few places for inspiration better than the source. The Marvel multiverse in the comics may not always be the easiest thing to understand, but some of the best multiverse stories have to do with Spider-Man. TheSpider-Versestoryline would likely be the best template to follow, as it includes just about every Spider-Man that fans could think of, from Spider-Gwen toSpider-Man 2099. All of it centers around the villain Morlun, and although he wasn’t featured inMarvel’s Spider-Man,he could appear as a threat in the sequel to force the multiverse’s many Spider-Men together.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Could “Steal” Its Multiverse From No Way Home

There are a number of ways thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2could borrow elements ofNo Way Home’s multiverse for its own use. From what the first trailer has shown, a large part of why the multiverse opens is because of a mishap with one of Doctor Strange’s spells. WhileSpider-Man 2likely wouldn’t be able to follow the same story beats, the Sanctum Sanctorum does appear inMarvel’s Spider-Man, implying that Strange exists in the game’s world. It’s completely possible thatMarvel’s Spider-Man2could introduce the multiverse in the form of a Doctor Strange spell gone wrong, or some other supernatural occurrence having to do with the character.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Could Just Get Weird With Its Multiverse

While a lot of comics take themselves pretty seriously, more often than not they tend to be fantastical stories with some truly odd moments.Marvel’s Spider-Man 2could lean into that reputation by going all out with its multiverse and making it the most absurd thing possible.Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Versedid this with its colorful cast that included Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Ham, butMarvel’s Spider-Man 2could take it one step further.

If Insomniac really wants to get ambitious, it could let players actually travel through the multiverse and explore every strange corner of Spider-Man’s history. Usinga mechanic similar toRatchet and Clank: Rift Apart’s rifts, players could go from normal New York, to the futuristic Nueva York of Spider-Man 2099, to the grotesque world seen in theMarvel Zombiesstoryline. It would be a pretty big risk for Insomniac, but if pulled off correctly, it could be one of the most dynamicSpider-Mangames in history.

Marvel’s Spider-Mandidn’t give any real indication that it would be dealing with the multiverse in future sequels, butNo Way Home’s first trailercertainly makes it an interesting prospect. Insomniac did such a great job with the character that it’s hard not to want big things in the sequel, but fans will have to temper their expectations if they anticipate a multiverse-centered game any time soon. For now, it is possible to imagine one big Spider-Verse by swinging through New York in some of the unlockable suits featured inMarvel’s Spider-Man.
