Given the game’s focus on space travel and exploration, it should come as no surprise to learn that spaceship building plays an important role inStarfield. Getting one’s hands on the perfect ship is just the first small step though, with players also needing to hire crew members in order to keep it running at maximum efficiency.
How to Recruit New Crew Members in Starfield
Players will unlock numerous Constellation companions as they make their way throughStarfield’s main story missions. However, it’s also possible to recruit crew members in bars and nightclubs throughout the game’s universe. These generic characters each specialize in one particular element of spaceship operations and can typically be found hanging around near the bar of their respective establishments. These include The Viewport in New Atlantis, The Hitching Post in Akila, and the Astral Lounge in Neon, with three or four potential crew members available at each location.
To hire a new crew member inStarfield, players simply need to talk to one of these NPCs and ask them about their rate. Rather than agreeing straight away though, players should instead attempt to negotiate with them, as a successful Persuasion attempt will typically result in them lowering their wage demands by a massive 50%. As such, those hoping to increase the size of their crew would do well to unlock and upgradethe Persuasion skill fromStarfield’s Social skill tree.

In addition to NPCs found in bars and clubs, players can also hire the Adoring Fan to work at one of their ships or outposts. However, this is only possible if players choosethe Hero Worshipped Traitat the beginning of the game, and comes with its own downsides. The largest of these is that the Adoring Fan is incredibly annoying and will constantly spout inane nonsense whenever in the player’s presence. Some may find this to be charming or funny, but most will probably get fed up with him pretty quickly.
How Many Crew Members Can You Hire in Starfield?
Initially, players will only be able to have up to three active crew members at any given time. However, by unlocking the Ship Command skill from the Social skill tree they’ll be able to increase this number to four. Higher ranks allow for even more active crew members, with five, six, and eight being available at ranks 2, 3, and 4 respectively.Upgrading the Ship Command skillrequires players to board or destroy ships with the maximum number of active companions by their side.
Starfieldis available now for PC and Xbox Series X|S.
