Superhero films have seen many actors portray characters in both the Marvel and DC universes, and star Josh Brolin was almost added to that growing list. The MCU star was apparently very close to signing on to playBatmanin Warner Bros.' DCEU.
Aside from his many critically acclaimed roles in Oscar winners such asNo Country for Old Men,Sicario, andDune, perhaps a couple of Brolin’s most popular ones in recent years stem from the Marvel universe, where the actor gained much praise for hisnow-iconic role as the mad titan Thanosin the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as Cable inDeadpool 2. Now, Brolin has opened about losing the role ofBatman.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on hisHappy Sad Confusedpodcast, Brolin recalled how he was once in the running to be cast as the caped crusader in Zack Snyder’sBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a role that ultimately piqued his interest when finding out it would involve a certain level of risk.“That was interesting to me,” Brolin said. “Again, because something that is set up to not work at all, or to work flyingly — I like those odds. I like playing with those odds. I’m like, ‘Am I the guy who’s gonna make it all fail?'”
“I didn’t think [he] was bad, but you talk to Clooney and he’s still talking about it – and it wasn’t his fault,” Brolin continued, of course referring toGeorge Clooney’s infamous takeon the comic book character in 1997’sBatman & Robin. “That was beforeDeadpool 2,” Brolin said of Snyder’s film. “…it would have been the older, more raspy [version] for lack of a better word… Honestly, that would have been a fun deal, and maybe I’ll do it when I’m 80.”
Snyder eventually landed on Ben Affleck to don the cape and cowl, and the actor would eventually go on to star in multiple DCEU projects before making his final appearance as Batman in the upcomingThe Flash. Of course, the most recent take on the Dark Knight isRobert Pattinson’s inThe Batman, as the Matt Reeves-directed film serves as a solo outing for the character in its own separate universe unlike Affleck’s version in the DCEU.
As for Brolin, however, the actor has been keeping busy since his MCU days. Gearing up to return forDenis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epicDune: Part Twoas weapons master Gurney Halleck, Brolin is also set to star alongside Peter Dinklage, Glenn Close, and Brendan Fraser in the upcoming comedy,Brothers. Brolin can also be seen on Amazon Prime Video’s mystery thriller seriesOuter Range, where he plays a Wyoming rancher who becomes involved with a supernatural mystery following the arrival of a drifter known as Autumn.
