Two legendary platforming icons,Kao the KangarooandYooka-Laylee, are getting a crossover with a new, free, DLC costume pack available today. Players of thepopular platforming gameKao the Kangaroocan now play through the entirety of its story as the beloved lizard Yooka from Playtonic Games’Yooka-Laylee. In addition to the free DLC skin, a new bundle, pairing the two games together, is available for purchase on Steam at a discounted rate.
Kao (pronounced K-O) the Kangaroo made his first debut on the Sega Dreamcast, Game Boy Advance, and PC in the early 2000s introducing players to the colorful, adventurous, world of its boxing protagonist as he thwarts the threat of hunters jeopardizing his family. Based on popular demand, Kao made his subsequent return inKao the Kangaroo Round 2,Kao Challengers,Kao the Kangaroo: Mystery of the Volcano, and more recently thereboot ofKao the Kangaroo, which released for a variety of current-generation systems in May 2022. The game is currently only available digitally but plans to release a physical copy this December, although it hasn’t been revealed if the physical release will include theYooka-LayleeDLC yet.

With the new DLC costume pack players can now play as Yooka, a chameleon who made his first appearance in 2017 in a spiritual successor of games likeBanjo-KazooieandChameleon Twist. The developers ofYooka-Laylee, Playtonic Games, were actually formed by a team of former Rare developers which would explain its comparison to the former.
The announcement of both the DLC and bundle package released in a trailer video, published by Tate Multimedia this morning, along with an announcement on theKao the KangarooTwitter page. Although both options are currently onlyavailable on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam, theKao the KangarooTwitter assured those curious that they will be made available on Switch at a later date.
Kao the Kangaroofollows the story of its titular character, two decades after its last release, as he picks up his magical boxing gloves and sets out on his biggest adventure yet: to find his lost sister, and discover what happened to his long-lost father. The game is packed with puzzles, collectibles, challenging boss battles, platforming, and a unique, quirky story. How Yooka will work his way into the story of Kao’s family, however, fans will just have to wait and find out.
