Summary
Lokiseason 2 actor Ke Huy Quan revealed that his costume on the MCU show contained a hidden tribute toThe Goonies, one of the early films that marked his rise to fame.
InLokiseason 2, Quan portrays the character Ouroboros—O.B. for short–who is something like an IT guy for the TVA.Quan’s Ouroboros is a timeline-jumping wizwho assists Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, with his annoying time-slipping issue. Aspects of Quan’s O.B. hearken back to his belovedGooniescharacter, Data; the fourteen-year-old inventor. Commonalities between the two characters include their knack for innovation, adorable nerdiness, and, most importantly, their love of gadgets. ManyLokifans have picked up on the similarities between the characters, but one intentionalGoonieseaster egg may have been missed.

In a recent Instagram post,Quanrevealed that a familiar-looking gadget seen on O.B.’s costume was none other than a replica of Data’s utility belt fromThe Goonies. According to Quan, theLokiprop department crafted the belt as a secret easter egg for the TVA handyman. While Data’s utility belt is more heavily featured inThe Goonies, O.B.’s belt can only be seen while he frantically figures out how to save the Temporal Loom inLokiseason 2’s third episode, “1893.” However, Quan suggests that if fans didn’t see the hidden prop the first time, they should “go back and watch the entire season again.”
While some fans claim they caughtTheGooniesnod, others have gone so far as to bring Data into the MCU lore. Given the complex multiverse Marvel Studios has set up, it’s not a surprising take. One commenter on the post stated they were “convinced it was semi-canon that [O.B.] was actually a Data variant the TVA plucked from a timeline where all of Data’s little gadgets actually worked perfectly.” This compelling fan theory opens up a can of worms regarding fellow Goonies/MCU actor Josh Brolin.
While the chances that anyone involved with the production ofLokidiscussed this theory are slim, fans were excited by Quan’s confirmation of a little concrete crossover. AmidThe Marvels' disappointing box office performance,Lokiremains a bright spot in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe. For those who loved the show’s second season, it may be worth heeding Quan’s advice and re-watching it for more clues pointing toward theGooniesto MCU pipeline.
Lokiseason 2 is now streaming on Disney Plus.
