TheNintendo 64has long been a favorite among the gaming community as one ofNintendo’s best consoles. Whether it be the unique controller or the fantastic line-up of games–such asSuper Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, andGoldenEye 007just to name a few–the console has maintained its beloved status for decades. One of the ways that the console is kept alive is thanks to the modding community, which appears to have a certain love for Nintendo’s home console of the late 90s. The most recent example is an excellent-looking portable Nintendo 64.
The Nintendo 64 was launched in 1996. It competed with the likes of the SEGA Saturn, SEGA Dreamcast, and PlayStation, but it has stood the test of time and is looked back on fondly. Thanks to the fact that the console uses cartridges and is so popular, the Nintendo 64 is a go-to console for many physical modders to tackle. This recent portable mod is not the first time someone has created aportable Nintendo 64 console, but the creation may be one of the most detailed and functional.

YouTuber smackedsam recently uploaded a video of his most recent one-of-a-kind portableNintendo 64. The modder created a handheld green Nintendo 64 that can play games right off of the cartridge. The outer case is a 3D printed design, however, all of the internal parts are original components. The console has all of the buttons of the Nintendo 64 controller, except the ‘Z’ button is placed on the shoulder alongside the ‘R’ and ‘L’ buttons. The device comes with a 16/9 5" inch TFT LCD screen, a memory card slot, and even a built-in Expansion Pak, which helped games such asExcitebike 64, Donkey Kong 64,andTony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2.
Smackedsam’s portable Nintendo 64–which is a lot more functional than theworld’s smallest portable Nintendo 64 mod–was custom made, as the modder creates them by request. Some additional features of the console include a headphone jack and a USB 2.0 port for charging. The console can apparently last up to three hours between charges.
When it comes to the popularity of the old console, it helps that theNintendo 64 has some all-time great video games, along with plenty of cult classics. In the video, the modder uses a cartridge to play some of those classics, such asPerfect DarkandMario Kart 64. But outside of any portable mods, fans will soon be able to enjoy Nintendo 64 games on the go with Nintendo Switch Online, which is something that players have been hoping for.
