Morbiusdirector Daniel Espinosa has recently praised Jared Leto’s method acting approach that he utilized for his role in the upcoming Marvel film. Sony has faced many trials and tribulations when it comes to the release ofMorbius,which has experienced a set of delays in the past years, mostly due to the Coronavirus.
However,Morbiusfinally made its long-anticipated debut in theaters this weekend, introducing audiences to Leto’s vampire anti-hero. The movie also stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Tyrese Gibson and Jared Harris. However, fans may be most excited and surprised to see Michael Keaton reprising his role in the film asSpider-Man: Homecomingiconic villain, Adrian Toomes, otherwise known as the Vulture. Leto’s character of Michael Morbius is actually technically half mortal, half vampire. He begins to conduct a series of experiments in order to cure his rare blood disease, but ends up accidentally possessing some weird form of vampirism along the way. AlthoughMorbius has been portrayed and pronounced a villainin theSpider-Mancomics, it looks as though the film is taking on a different approach to the character. Morbius is set to interrogate the complexities and duality of good and evil traits that reside in everyone, giving him the chance to grow, allowing for him to make a full transformation throughout the duration of the film. However, don’t get it twisted, Morbius is without a doubt, still quite wicked at heart.

This is why director Espinosa has recently indicated that Sony eventually wants to make aSinister Sixfilm, featuring Morbius alongside the Vulture. Leto could possibly be playingthe character of Morbiusfor quite some time, which means his method acting approach might be a little difficult to carry on with. Yet, Espinosa has recently shared in an interview withGamesRadar+, that he has never seen someone as dedicated and devoted to their craft as Leto. He stated, “I almost never saw him getting into the role, it was more that Michael Morbius was on set. The moment he would exit his trailer, it would no longer be Jared Leto, and he would not want to be spoken to as Jared Leto. He’s a very committed actor."
While some criticize method acting, Espinosa recognized the benefits of staying in character even when the cameras stop rolling. “He’s right in many ways,” Espinosa said. “It’s hard to hold on to character, so that being it during the whole day gives him a certain kind of freedom. Because, what many people, when they talk about Jared, they talk about the effort and how hard it is. But what’s fun with working with Jared is that it’s also very light and easy, because he is that person, so he can go anywhere.”
Although many actors may find it stifling to stay in character for so long, both Espinosa and Leto seem to find it oddly liberating. The buzz andhype aroundMorbiushasn’t been too enthusiasticso far, but film could still have an impact on Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
