NetherRealm Studiois the developer known for creating the thriving franchises ofInjusticeandMortal Kombat, but it hasn’t seemed to expand outside of those games. However, according to creative developerEd Boon, another game outside of those series could possibly be in the works from the studio.
With the recently releasedMortal Kombat 11: Aftermathexpansion out, NetherRealm is getting a lot of attention for the fighting series. The new expansion had fans excited for the company’s work, and this new development may add to that buzz. While the developer has only brought games to life within theInjusticeandMortal Kombatworlds, it seems that this may no longer be the case.

In an interview with Geoff Keighley ahead of theMortal Kombat 11 DLCrelease, NetherRealm’s creative director Ed Boon mentioned something that fans have latched onto. While participating in the ongoing Summer Game Fest, he said that NetherRealm Studios has “other stuff in the oven” beyond the usual two franchises while talking about current projects the developer is working on. NetherRealm has not made any comments regarding this comment, so fans can only speculate on what kind of projects these could be and what the games could entail.
While NetherRealm Studios may give more details as theSummer Game Festprogresses, there is not much much to go off of. The context of the statement was in relation to the studio’s mainstayMortal Kombatseries, essentially saying that while it’s nice to do other projects like Injustice and “other stuff in the oven,” it’s still good to get to work onMortal Kombat. Fans are unsure what the other project (or projects, perhaps) the studio could be working on, as there have been no signs that the developer has been creating anything other than the main series that players are used to seeing from NetherRealm.
While it is likely that a newNetherRealm Studio’s project would be a fighting game, as that is the consistent pattern with games that have come out of their studio, the developers may also try branching out and trying something different than what fans are used to seeing.
