Plot details for the long-awaitedBlack Panther: Wakanda Foreverhave been kept under wraps, but one rumor that has continued to brew all throughout the film’s production is the Atlantean anti-hero Namor having a role in the film. Now, a new behind-the-scenes photo that reveals an underwater set may confirm Namor’s appearance inBlack Panther 2.
Namor the Submariner, who was first introduced inMarvel Comics#1 in 1939, is the son of a mortal sea captain and an Atlantis princess. Being one of the first superheroes in comic history, Namor has crossed paths with many other heroes such as Captain America and the Fantastic Four. He seeks to protect his kingdom against any rivals, including the Wakandans, so seeing two advanced, hidden civilizations that clash together might just be whatBlack Panther 2will center on, especially if the sequel looks to carry over many of the same mature, geopolitical themes explored in its predecessor.

The fan-run Twitter account Black Panther: Wakanda Forever News (via Atlanta Filming) posted a photo from the set of the highly-anticipated sequel that showcases a large water tank surrounded by blue screens. Marvel Studios has not confirmed Namor to be in the film, though the casting ofNarcos: Mexicostar Tenoch Huertain an antagonist type role led many fans to believe he will be. The set photo has a caption that claims it’s a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the filming of a scene with Namor and the Atlanteans. On top of that, Atlanta Filming removed the original tweet shortly after it was up.
In addition to Namor making his MCU debut,Black Panther 2’s plot was originally going to rely heavily on T’Challa growing into his new role as king of Wakanda. However, sinceBlack Panther will not be recast, Ryan Coogler and Kevin Feige seem to be shifting the story’s focus on Wakanda’s rich history and the ancestors who came before, an aspect that was briefly presented in the first film.
Letitia Wright’s Shuri andWinston Duke’s M’Baku will reportedly have bigger rolesinBlack Panther 2, as it seems they will step in as Wakanda’s new bold leaders and most likely continue working towards T’Challa’s goal presented at the end of the first film, which involved having Wakanda more open and accessible to the rest of the world.
Set to arrive later this year, fans can soon expect confirmation about Namor’s role in the film as well as a first trailer surfacing online. The sequel will feature many returning characters along with new additions. Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia, Danai Gurira’s Okoye, Martin Freeman’s Everett K. Ross, and Angela Bassett’s Ramonda are all returning, as new additions include Michaela Coel in an undisclosed role and Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams / Iron Heart, a genius inventor who creates a suit that rivals Tony Stark’s Iron Man armor.A series for Disney Plus titledIronheartis in development.
