Harrowing Dragons

The collaboration between FromSoftware and George R. R. Martinwas bound to give fans their fair share of fantastical creatures. Dragons were probably a safe bet if people were to guess what foesElden Ringwould include, and the first screenshot put out by Keighley probably exceeds expectations for most.

The image does an amazing job at offering the idea of movement that suggests an imminent, gruesome fight with how close the dragon is to the knight. Even though dragons are usually depicted as big creatures compared to humans, this particular instance manages to put great emphasis on the difference in size. It also setshigh expectations onElden Ring’s gameplay.

Another main highlight of the screenshot is the glowing Erdtree in the background. From this image alone, it can be deduced that the game will feature some interesting weapons, as well as very challenging boss fights as dragons seem to be arecurring boss inElden Ring.

Dismaying Trolls

Trolls are not uncommon in fantasy settings, butElden Ring’s trolls seem to bring something new. The way trolls are portrayed in the second screenshot makes them seem more otherwordly, as though they are undead. The way the bigger troll’s ribcage is showing and its boney arm resembles the pale man from Guillermo del Toro’sPan’s Labyrinthmaking it even more intimidating.

Another interesting characteristic of the screenshot is that there are three smaller trolls. The additional mobs carry staffs and blades, while the bigger troll is holding a wand emitting a blue halo in the form of a sigil that seems to feature the Erdtree. All of this might suggest that the trolls inElden Ringcan be set apart from their counterparts in other fantasy titlesby fighting in groups and utilizing magic.

It seems like the game will feature scenes in ruins that help to paint a bleak world and accentuatesElden Ring’s expected dark lore. Additionally, magic seems to be a force that will present itself with the main characters and foes alike, meaning enemies should be complex both on the battlefield and in the narrative.

Grim Magic

Probably the first thing one will notice in the third image is the golden sigil, notably more elaborated than the one fromElden Ring’s cover but composed of the same golden light. The sigil features three rings just like on the game’s cover, as well aswhat appears to be the Erdtree. FromSoftware has not revealed the origin of these screenshots, so this image is bound to keep the fans speculating.

It is still not clear if the screenshot might be related to the breaking of the Elden Ring, or if it is meant to show some magical ritual. In any case, this image is also helpful because it displays some of theElden Ring’s mythology and dark scenery. The foreground highlights a monk with a neck ring kneeling before the sigil, but two goblin-like creatures creep up from the back of the room as a pile of skeletons fill the chamber.

Unnerving Sentinels

While the other screenshots present known fantasycreatures that have been reinterpreted forElden Ring, the final one provided by Keighley is shows a largely unknown character. These are probably among the most unsettling things that have been revealed so far.

The creatures' bodies are somewhat similar to bells and seem to be metallic and heavy, meanwhile their crying face with a headpiece makes them seem all the more perturbing. Their most prominent feature is probably the long-chained pendulum arms ending in blood-stained blades. Even if the image does not showElden Ring’s creatures in combat, the characters are so well made that it is possible to imagine how they will fight.

The background also gives away something aboutElden Ring. The spiked constructions in front of cliffs resemble fortresses or tents. An old ragged banner is displayed in the background featuring the Erdtree, and even further away there seems to be a site where bodies are hanging from a wood structure. While it is anybody’s guess where these figures arelocated inElden Ring’s map, there is a lot of worldbuilding just in this image alone.

Bandai Namco has remained silent for a while, butElden Ringis set to release in early 2022,at which point the world will get to learn more about these foes and the game’s deep lore. Considering the images alone create a disturbing landscape, fans will probably expect the game to be even more complex and dark.

Elden Ringwill release for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on July 30, 2025.
