The Deadites are returning in an all-newEvil Deadfilm to do what they do best: possess bodies and feast on souls. Whatever unholy mayhem is unleashed this time, however, Ash Williams won’t be around to fight it. The chainsaw-handed protagonist of the original trilogy will be sitting out the sequel. The man at the helm won’t be Sam Raimi either, as a new director has been tapped to take over.

In an interview with Empire, Ash Williams actor Bruce Campbell dished on the next entry in the series. The film, titledEvil Dead Now, will be written and directed by Lee Cronin, who Sam Raimi handpicked, according to Campbell. His work includes 2019’s supernatural horror filmThe Hole in the Groundand the Méliès d’Argent award-winning shortGhost Train.

With Ash out of the picture, the film will instead star a female protagonist, much like the 2013Evil Deadreboot. Also like the reboot, Raimi and Campbell will return as producers. When discussing the film, Campbell said, “From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating."  He added that the newest entry will be “a little more dynamic” this time around. According to Campbell, the spirit of the films will remain the same.

“We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”
