The upcoming comedy-drama adaptation of 2021’s GameStop short-squeeze saga,Dumb Money, has added Nick Offerman and Talia Ryder to the cast of actors. The news comes as the Black Bear Pictures-financed project is in active production for an eventual theatrical release.

Based on Ben Mezrich’s aptly named bookThe Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees,Dumb Moneyis set to dramatize and satirize theGameStopSaga of 2021, wherein a group of amateur traders who frequented the WallStreetBets subreddit made a coordinated effort to inflate the price of GameStop stock in a bid to stick it to certain financial sector big-wigs and impacted the stock market forever in the process. MGM,the James Bond franchise holderthat had been up for sale just weeks prior, secured the rights to an adaptation soon after.

Deadlineconfirms thatDumb Moneyhas added two more stars to its roster in the persons of Offerman and Ryder, who have both joined the cast of the upcoming project in undisclosed roles. Ryder is best known for her star-making performance in the 2020 drama flickNever Rarely Sometimes Alwaysin the role of Skylar, one of the film’s two female leads. Offerman is best known for his time on the NBC sitcomParks and Recreation, which was popular enough to getaParks and Recreationreunion special in 2020for charity, despite the show rounding up in 2015.

Anthony Ramos, Vincent D’Onofrio, andDane DeHaan had joined the cast ofDumb Money, and this latest addition is sure to ramp up interest in the project. The film finds itself in a rather peculiar spot in terms of being based on a popular event with no real metric for how that might translate into fan interest. However, the film has been in good hands from the onset, with a screenplay by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo directed by Craig Gillespie, who is also attached as a producer alongside Teddy Schwarzman and Aaron Ryder.

Despite MGM backing out of the project in October, new financiers Black Bear Pictures seem determined to maintain course, with the addition of more big names to aGameStop Stock film that already cast Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan, Paul Dano, and Pete Davidson clearly showing the company’s commitment to the completion and maintained magnitude of the project. Sony Pictures has already secured US distribution rights while working on international distribution in conjunction with Black Bear International and several independent distributors.

While it’s still developing,Dumb Moneyalready has formidable competition in the GameStop saga adaptation department, withNetflix’sEat the Rich: The GameStop Sagaalready released. The series from Netflix does much the same asDumb Money, presenting what Netflix execs called “a viral David vs. Goliath story for the 21st century” to viewing audiences.

Dumb Moneyis set for a theatrical release on a yet-to-be-announced date.
