Coming after the company dropped a surpriseSuper MarioDirect for the series 35th anniversary, Nintendo has revealed a number of huge new projects that have been speculated about for a number of months now. From a Switch port ofSuper Mario 3D Worldto theSuper Mario 3D All-Stars Collection- which bringsSuper Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine,andSuper Mario Galaxyto the handheld/home console hybrid -it’s clear the company decided to go all out on itsMariofocused day.
Perhaps the most unexpected of the stream’s announcements came at the midway point, however, with the company announcing a new online take on the series calledSuper Mario Bros. 35.The game looks to be a hilarious twist on the battle royale genre, with 35 players duking it out through old-schoolSuper Mario Bros.inspired maps in an effort to be the last Mario standing.

How the game works actually appears to be somewhat intricate, with 35 players loading into a level with two large screens on either side showing the perspectives of their 34 opponents. From here, they progress through levels and attempt to defeat notoriousMarioenemies, with each foe they vanquish teleporting to the level of an opponent. Of course, said opponents are also sending foes back to the player, with new enemies coming frequently and forcing them to stay on their toes. It seems players will also have to keep an eye out for a timer in the top left corner of the screen too, with it only replenishing as enemies are defeated. It seems to be clearly inspired byTetris 99.
The winner is, naturally, the last Mario to survive the onslaught, making for a nifty new take on the incredibly popular multiplayer staple. It seems, to aid in their attempt to secure a win, players will also be able to utilize an item roulette to gain iconic abilities, with the randomized screen scrolling through essentialMarioitems such aspower stars, mushrooms, and fire flowers. Players can also utilize four strategies, although, it’s not all too clear in the trailer what they do. The first is called “attackers,” the second is called “most coins,” the third is called “lowest time,” and the final one is called “random.”
Strangely, the battle royale title will only be available for a limited time, beginning on October 1 and ending on August 08, 2025. It’ll be exclusive toNintendo SwitchOnline users as well, meaning only those with subscriptions will be able to access the mode. It’s definitely a big departure compared to what Nintendo usually opts for in its online experiences, but it’s great to see a battle royale with a distinctlyMariotwist.
Super Mario 35will be available on October 1 for Nintendo Switch.
