True to the spirit of the Wizarding World, there’s one particular plant inHogwarts Legacythat shines above the rest, and it allows players to cheese through even the toughest battles if properly used. As the increasingly-popular Professor Garlick would often stress in herHerbology class inHogwarts Legacy, taking care of plants can be a highly rewarding experience, not just for the potion ingredients that they provide, but also for the potent weapons they represent in combat.
While dispatching Ashwinders and Ranrok’s extremists with the Unforgivable Curses has its appeal, there’s more to a Witch or Wizard’s arsenal than their charms andspells inHogwarts Legacy. Between upgrading their gear with byproducts harvested from the magical beasts that reside in their Vivarium, to stocking up on useful potions such as Edurus or Thunderbrew concocted inside the Room of Requirement, there are plenty of ways for players to gain an extra edge in battle. The winning combination in this particular example comes from Herbology.

The strategy posted by OpeningChipmunk1700 on the officialHogwarts Legacysubreddit makes use of a plant familiar to allHarry Potterfans: the Mandrake. The piercing screech of a mature Mandrake is considered lethal, and though the plants only incapacitate and damage enemies under regular gameplay, this particular build inHogwarts Legacyelevates the Mandragora to truly live up to its reputation.
As outlined in the thread, past a certain attribute threshold, and with the proper traits imbued into their gear, players canclear entire groups of enemies inHogwarts Legacyusing their trusty Mandrake and little else. Given that the seeds can be purchased at the Magic Neep in Hogsmeade for a paltry sum, players can start producing Mandrakes within their Room of Requirement at a generous rate, assuming they conjured a suitable number of small pot Herbology tables.
However, the real magic comes from slotting in three Herbology traits and three Deafening traits into a player character’s gear inHogwarts Legacy. This pushes a Mandragora’s damage to lethal numbers, especially when combined with the Headache talent in the Room of Requirements tree. The trickiest part in making the Mandrake strategy work is to hunt down the Deafening and Herbology traits needed to spruce up its damage, as they are effectively random drops from thetreasure chests found inHogwarts Legacy’s poacher camps. For players who lack the patience (or luck) to hunt down the traits, save game reloading still remains a valid option.
Hogwarts Legacyis out now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X with PS4 and Xbox One versions coming April 4 and a Nintendo Switch port dropping July 25.
