The announcement is part of a refocused strategy for Nintendo with this year’s game releases due to the impact of COVID-19. With the work-from-home mandate taking effect, the usual plans of a Nintendo Direct and hands-on previews at industry events had to change with a focus on smaller, individual announcements. COVID-19 has also impacted development on first party games which Nintendo announcedmay delay future announcementsas well.

Nintendo has opted for Direct-minis and Twitter announcements thus far including with videos updating on some third party releases last month.Paper Mario: The Origami King, was announced this past May and released only a few months later in July andPikmin 3 Deluxewill follow suit. No other release dates have been announced as of yet for many of Nintendo’s other first party games in development.

COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the games industry as a whole with events being re-planned or canceled outright. Many publishers have resorted to releasing updates of games on developer-focused videos. In a similar manner, plans forSuper Nintendo World at Universal Studios Orlandowere also recently put on hold with the 2023 opening being delayed indefinitely.
