If there is one franchise that never goes out of style in Japan, it is certainlyPokemon. With new video games, anime series, manga, trading cards, and, of course, plenty of merchandise,Pokemonis one of the most famous exports that Japan has ever created. Internationally and domestically, it is always relevant, and regularly celebrated. While you can regularly find some kind of specialPokemonevent in Japan whether you’re just visiting or living there, none are quite as big as this one.
The reason this particular upcomingPokemonevent is so big is that it is taking place inside the tallest building in Japan, Tokyo Sky Tree. It is a special art exhibition that is coming to Tokyo this summer, featuring exclusive merchandise, themed foods, special photo opportunities, and decorations. The biggest part, though, is that the outside of the tower is going to light up in special color schemes based on certain Pokemon, which can be seen from all over the city.

The upcomingPokemonart exhibitionis based on the latest series of the anime, calledPokemon Horizons: The Series(or simplyPocket Monsterin Japanese). It is the eighth season in thePokemonanime series, and has been airing since April 2023 in Japan and in March 2024 in the United States. The main characters ofPokemon Horizonsall feature heavily in this special event, along with their associated Pokemon. The exhibition is titled “Pokemon to Aozora Sukai Tsurī ～ Kimi to Pokemon no Kagayaku Omoide ～”, or “Pokemon and the Blue Sky Sky Tree: Pokemon and Your Brightest Memories” (herein, Pokemon and the Blue Sky).
Pokemon and the Blue Sky has plenty for fans of the anime (or even just of the franchise) to see and enjoy. Sky Tree’s observation floors have been decorated with characters from the anime, including a huge board introducing the main characters (Liko, Roy, Dot, and Professor Friede) and their Pokemon companions. There are a lot of photo spots around, too, where fans can pose with collages of differentPokemon with the Tokyo skyline behind them, a cutout ofCaptain Pikachufloating away into the sky with balloons, and a chance to sit in the captain’s chair of the Brave Olivine as seen in the anime surrounded by the series' main characters. At night, there will also be showings of a 6-minute special animation on a floor 350m (1148ft) off the ground, where you may watchPokemonwhile looking out over the night view of Tokyo.
Lots of Exclusive Goods Await
Pokemonis all about collecting, and there are some very exclusive goods for fans to get at Pokemon and the Blue Sky. Most of the goods feature the combinations ofLiko and Floragato, Roy and Fuecoco, Dot and Quaxly, and Professor Friede with Charizard and Captain Pikachu. Goods include everything from cookies to tote bags and pins to key chains, all with art made specifically for this exhibition and featuring Sky Tree itself in the background. Spending more than 3000 yen ($18 USD) also earns you one of five special collector’s cards.
Plus, the Sky Tree Cafe will have a lot of themed food for sale. These include parfaits decorated with Floragato, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, sodas based on Pikachu and Liko, and muffins decorated with some various other Pokemon. All orders will also come with a free coaster with a random design of one of the main Pokemon inPokemon Horizons. And of course, these coasters and designs are exclusive only to Pokemon and the Blue Sky!
Pokemon Lights Up the Tokyo Skyline
Pokemon is taking over Tokyo’s biggest landmark
Arguably the most exciting - and definitely the biggest - part of Pokemon and the Blue Sky are the light shows that will take place on the outside of Sky Tree. At 634m (2080ft), Sky Tree can be seen from all over the city, which means the light shows can be enjoyed by anyone for free throughout summer. On select nights throughout June, July, August, and September, the tower’s exterior lighting will be changed to the colors of the most prominent Pokemon inPokemon Horizons.
These color schemes will be based on Floragato, Fuecoco, Quaxly, Charizard,Terapagos, and Captain Pikachu. Sky Tree will rotate between these six designs every two and a half minutes, which means any day in the summer that you are able to catch the light show, you will be able to see all the different designs. Especially for anyone on a budget or families with kids, it’s great to see something that is totally free and easily accessible even without spending money or having to visit the entire exhibition. It will last for an average of four hours each night.
“Pokemonand the Blue Sky Sky Tree: Pokemon and Your Brightest Memories” will be hosted at Tokyo Sky Tree from June 25 to May 12, 2025.
