Summary

Lanturn from the Game Boy ColorPokemonera has been given a more majestic spin to its original design. The creator of the piece answered some questions from eager fans who appreciated the new look.

Known as the “Light Pokemon,” Lanturn is the first Water and Electric-type that was introduced inPokemonGold and Silver. Players have the chance of reeling in one of their own by fishing in areas such as New Bark Town or evolving a Chinchou. As an aquatic creature, Lanturn can learn Hidden Machine moves such as Surf or Whirlpool to help traverse the sea. Both of these Pokemon have been seen throughout the series with their most recent appearance being inPokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

The artistic Lanturn reimagining comes courtesy of WhatWonders on Reddit. A blue body and yellow mask match the official artwork from The Pokemon Company, but from there, things change. The artist says they took inspiration from angler fish and Greenland sharks, while seemingly rivaling some ofthe strongest legendary Pokemon like Kyogrewith strong lines in the fins and gills. Known for its light source, this new rendition branches the glow from the tips of its antenna while streaks run from the mask to the tail and through the fins. This antenna is more of a tree than just a simple extension, as bulbs of light are complimented by smaller trails nearby.

With a monstrous inspiration comes gargantuan size. Lanturn is shown next to the likes of thefearsomePokemonWater-types like Gyaradoswhile peaceful schools of Luvdisc, Mantine, and Tentacool swim along the deep sea. They look like mere shadows compared to the large underwater sun-like Lanturn, amplified by large rock formations near the ocean floor. Matching this, the expression and body language of the Lanturn is more calm and confident compared to official art being more playful.

This rendition of the “Light Pokemon” was praised by those in WhatWonders' comment section, with one user wishing the artwork was an officialGigantamax form inPokemon Sword and Shield. As users appreciated Lanturn getting some much-needed love, the creator gave the piece a light backstory in the comments. WhatWonders described this Lanturn as an ancient protector of the Hoenn region found only after players start to explore the depths. This Pokemon may have committed a heroic deed in the past that led to a legendary ascension.
