Pokemon GOis a strange phenomenon. Originally a small, but fun distraction, it built off its initial promise into something grand. During its recent GO Fest, players caught almost 1 billion Pokemon. With those numbers, its safe to say there’s a mass appeal, even during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Pokemon GOis aware of its community, and bills itself as a social experience. This is properly celebrated through its Community Day. During each Community Day, certain rewards are available all day long for players who know where to look and what to do. As players share their Pokemon pictures along a certain theme, they also scramble to catch the Community Day exclusive Pokemon.

The Community Day exlusive Pokemon usually isn’t difficult to get ahold of. Unlike a festival exclusive prize, likeShadow Mewtwo, it’s mostly just a matter of getting to the right place. That could prove difficult during the current pandemic of course, but nevertheless, Niantic has revealed August’s Community Day Pokemon. This upcoming Community Day the community will be on the hunt for the red floppy fish itself: Magikarp. Best places to look include rivers, streams, and other bodies of water. Or maybe just the ground.

With such a notoriously useless Pokemon up for grabs, will people still be out hunting it? Odds are they will, for a couple reasons. One is that thepeople still playingPokemon GOthese days are committed. They play it regularly whenever they go out, both in groups and alone. Some have said it’s a great distraction from days that are otherwise nothing but monotonous work. It’s somehow a great distraction both in spite of, and because of, COVID-19.

The second reason is the unique move that each Community Day Pokemon gets. Whenever a Pokemon is highlighted as an official Community Day Pokemon, catching it will during that day will allow it to learn a unique move. In some cases, as with Magikarp, that move will only be learned by a later evolution. The Magikarp’s unique move, Aqua Tail, probably won’t land it inthe best Great League teams, but only time will tell for sure.

There will be many Magikarp to catch come Community Day, and despite the Pokemon’s less than stellar status, lots to do with them. Players often post shots of themselves with their Pokemon in interesting locations. While it might be best to stay at home as much as possible, there’s still plenty of room for fun Magikarp moments. So whoever feels the spirit and knows to stay safe is encouraged to find a Magikarp andslap Team Rocket’s Giovanniwith it until it grows into a Gyarados.
