At this point, it seems like nearly every star of every franchise not yet featured inSuper Smash Bros Ultimatehas been rumored to bethe fifth and final character slated forSmash Ultimate’s DLC Fighter Pass. And with The Game Awards taking place in just a few days, speculation has been rampant that aSmash-related announcement could happen there, which makes this piece of news somewhat confusing and potentially worrying.

Twitter user and well-known leaker Sabi has been one of the more prominent voices regarding the game’s potential new content throughout the past few weeks, having both contributed and shot down recent rumors of newSmash Ultimatecharacters. Over the weekend, they got people buzzing when they shared a mysterious tweet from Jon Cartwright of prominent YouTube channel GameXplain. Said tweet consists of the box art forPokemon Dash, an oft-forgottenPokemonracing gamereleased for the Nintendo DS in 2005, and a cryptic message that reads: “Game Awards end That’s it? No Dash?”

As vague as that is, that could really mean anything, but the prevalent theory here is that since “Dash” rhymes with “Smash,” Cartwright is sneakily suggesting that there won’t be any new announcement forSuper Smash Bros Ultimateduring The Game Awards.

Furthermore, in a follow-up tweet, Sabi wrote that they were informed by “a source who knows who FP5 is” is unsure about whether an announcement is planned for the event, but stressed that that was only what that source knew. “Character could still be at TGAs possibly, just a particular source wasn’t sure,” they wrote. “If Jon’s tweet genuinely isn’t a corroboration, I figured I’d still get it out there. Basically: not really sure whether or not it’ll be at TGAs is all.”

In the past few weeks, numerous characters from across a vast selection of franchises have been rumored as beingSmash Ultimate’s fifth Fighter Pass character, with popular ones includingDevil May Cry’s Dante,Half-Life’s Gordon Freeman, andKingdom Hearts’ Sora. Nearly all of these have been debunked so far, and the latest rumor, thatMaster Chief from theHaloseries is coming toSuper Smash Bros Ultimate, is pretty sketchy at best.

A lot has been said yet there’s still not much for fans to go off of currently, which is why so many are hopeful for an announcement atThe Game Awards, and worried at the possibility of there being no announcement. But like Sabi said, we won’t know for sure until 2019’s big awards ceremony airs this Thursday.
