Despite its release almost two years ago,Red Dead Redemption 2still remains a popular game today, especially since the game was ported to the PC late last year. Of course, much of the game’s longevity can be attributed to its high replayability value, given that even after players finish the main campaign, there are still tons of things that players can doand explore within the game.

Given the vast open-world environment that Rockstar Games was able to create forRed Dead Redemption 2, the game offers a wide variety of side quests, unique storylines, and even a handful of mysteriesthat make the action-adventure title somewhat spooky. Of course, while these mysteries are satisfying to explore, the unsolved cases inRed Dead Redemption 2are definitely more interesting especially when it tells a story about the game’s characters, locations, and organizations. Out of the many unsolved mysteries inRed Dead Redemption 2, the one that revolves around the town of Limpany is often the most overlooked by many players. So what is the mystery surrounding the abandoned town? And why does it remain unsolved?

What happened in Limpany?

As previously mentioned, Limpany is a burned-down town that players can find somewhere in the middle of Flatneck Station and the Dakota River inRed Dead Redemption 2. Upon reaching the abandoned town, players will soon discover that the small town of Limpany was burned to the ground and the reason for its demise, and whether any of its residents were able to survive, remains unknown. Towards the center of the town, players will find a jailhouse and upon entering it, players will witness numerous corpses lying around.

Given that the jailhouse itself is made of stone, and since flammable objects inside such as mattresses and pillows remain intact, it is apparent that the people inside the jailhouse died due to smoke inhalation. Apart from the jailhouse, Limpany also featured establishments that are commonin a small town during this erasuch as a saloon and a general store. Upon further exploration of the town and its surrounding area, players will discover a part of the woods that is also burned to the ground. Initially, one might think that a forest fire is the cause of the town burning down, but given that the area between the town and the forest is not burned, this scenario remains unlikely.

So what is the true cause of the demise of Limpany? At face value, it is pretty difficult to identify what happened to the town, especially since there are no quests or side quests that revolve around Limpany. However, some eagle-eyed players discovered pieces of evidence that could explain the destruction of Limpany. All over the ruins of the town, players will find several barrels lying around, and these barrels are stamped with the brand of Cornwall Kerosene & Tar.

The Possible Involvement of Cornwall Kerosene & Tar

With this discovery, it is likely that the Cornwall Kerosene & Tar, owned by one of the game’smain antagonists, Leviticus Cornwall, is somehow linked to the destruction of Limpany. Of course, it is easy to say that the barrels are there because the residents of the town are in business with Cornwall. However, looking at Cornwall’s history in the game, he is known to murder anyone who crosses his path.

Players will remember The Oil Derrick, which is an abandoned structure owned by a small company belonging to a Mr. Varley. Upon reaching the abandoned structure, players will discover that Mr. Varley happened to undercut the profits of Cornwall Kerosene & Tar. Due to the competition between the two companies, Cornwall offered to purchase the Oil Derrick from Varley to which he refused, costing him his life.

With this scenario, the game establishes that Cornwall will do anything in his power to protect his interests, and while there are no records of Cornwall’s dealings with the town of Limpany, it is possible that a resident there, or perhaps the town itself, was under some sort of transaction with Cornwall that probably gone awry. One possibility is that the town of Limpany refused to do business with Cornwall, leading him to burn down the town using his barrels of kerosene to send a message. Of course, this scenario is just pure speculation, but it is a strong possibility of what could have transpired in the burned-down town. Unfortunately, given that there are no quests and letters found in Limpany, the player is unable to investigate what truly happened in the town, and its demise remains unsolved.

Red Dead Redemption 2is out now for the PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
