When Capcom unveiledResident Evil 8, also namedResident Evil Village, during Sony’s June PlayStation 5 event, fans were often as intrigued as they were excited. The newResident Evilgame is unique, but takes clear inspiration from prior titles in theResident Evilfranchise. It features the first-person view ofResident Evil 7, as well as clear thematic inspiration from bothResident Evil 4and the original game. This stands out in Capcom’s newly released Developer Insights video, which features glimpses of newResident Evil 8gameplay.
The new video was shared as part of the ongoing Tokyo Game Show event. It’s over six minutes long and features some of theproject leads forResident Evil 8discussing the ideas behind the game. As they’re talking, brief gameplay clips fromResident Evil 8are shared. Several of these appear to be new gameplay, previously unseen. Each clip offers a glimpse of whatResident Evil 8’s village offers to players, teasing a much larger setting that “village” may imply.

Clips of new gameplay include a brief encounter with a monster that folds out of the earth, the player wandering through the snowy wilderness, crawling through a rat-filled gutter, and a look at an incredibly detailed mansion or temple of sorts. Each clip portrays aunique aspect ofResident Evil 8that Capcom wants to highlight. There are also clips of gameplay that have been previously shown, too, including the game’s unique storybook narrative device, as well as some footage from early in the game.
Breaking down the new glimpses of gameplay, the monster is used as an example of how Capcom makes the world more terrifying. The monster coming out of the earthy wall shows how players will have to constantly be wary of being attacked. The snowy wilderness is an example ofResident Evil 8’s open design, with a huge world to explore. The gutter is shown as an example of how detailed and moodyResident Evil 8is even in unimportant moments. And the manor is an example of how that level of detail is retained or even expanded for bigger set-pieces.
To be sure, these gameplay teases are unlikely to sateResident Evil 8fanshungry for more information. But fans curious about the development of the game and the thought process behind it will appreciate the effort Capcom’s gone to. Those hungry for more action will be better served by Capcom’s upcomingResident Evil 8-focused event at TGS, which should feature much more gameplay.
It continues to impress how quickly Capcom is able to put out newResident Evilgames at such high quality. WithResident Evil 2launching in 2019,Resident Evil 3in 2020, andResident Evil 8coming in 2021, Capcom truly spoils its fanbase. Hopefully,Resident Evil 8lives up to its predecessors' legacy.
