Rockstar Games puts out incredibly popular games, a fact that few would disagree with. Whether it’sGrand Theft Auto 5or other games from the franchise,Red Dead Redemption 2, or several other titles, fans will play Rockstar’s releases as they’re able. That’s also true for Nintendo Switch owners, who will be receivingGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Editionwhen it launches on November 11. That may be just the first of multiple Rockstar projects coming to Switch in the future, however.
Leaker SamusHunter2 shared some interesting information on Twitter Friday morning. The leaker claimed to have heard from one of their sources that Nintendo was working with Rockstar to port itsRAGE game engineto Nintendo Switch. While it’s not a confirmation of any specific games being ported to the platform, enabling the RAGE engine on Switch would allow Rockstar to bring over multiple different games to the platform.

Just as examples, SamusHunter2 listed Rockstar’s RAGE engine games. Theyinclude bothGrand Theft Auto 4andGrand Theft Auto 5, bothRed Dead Redemptiongames, racing gameMidnight Club, as well as the classicMax Payne 3. Theoretically, if Rockstar was able to get RAGE running on Nintendo Switch, all of these games could potentially be ported to the platform. Of course, Rockstar would certainly be very selective of what it invested development time into.
One thing to keep in mind is that just because the Switch runs an engine doesn’t mean it can run a game. BothGrand Theft Auto 5, as well asGrand Theft Auto Online, andRed Dead Redemption 2could demand more hardware performance than the Nintendo Switch is able to put out. That would limit the Switch to older games. That doesn’t make the possibility of the originalRed Dead RedemptionorGrand Theft Auto 4on Switch any less exciting, though.
Another possibility is that support for the RAGE engine on Switch, as well as follow-up game development, would be just enough time for Nintendo to release its oft-rumored Nintendo Switch 2. A more powerfulNintendo Switch capable of runningGrand Theft Auto 5, and maybe evenGrand Theft Auto Online, would be a very lucrative effort.
That’s getting very far ahead of the situation, however. For the time being, Rockstar supporting its RAGE engine in Switch is just a rumor. And even if it’s true, that doesn’t mean Rockstar will actually port any of its games to Switch in the future. Nintendo fans will have to be content withGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition’s upcoming Switch releaseand the hope that maybe more games will arrive in years to come.
