In recent years,Xboxhas commited itself to make its old games playable on current hardware. If a new rumor is true,Xbox’s library of backward compatible games will be getting a little bigger next month.
It is hard to believe that someone can insert their original Xbox copy ofStar Wars Knights of the Old Republicinto their Xbox Series X, and it will not only play but be enhanced with the power of the newer console. Xbox has set an amazing standard when it comes to backwards compatibility that Nintendo and Sony have yet to replicate, extending it back multiple console generations. AsXbox has explained previously about backward compatibility, though, not every game is technically capable of running on current hardware, meaning that some titles are restricted to their original consoles. Nonetheless, there are still hundreds of titles throughout Xbox’s history that can come to the service.

XboxEra co-host and leaker Nick Shpeshal claimed on Twitter that more backwards compatible games are coming to Xbox next month. Shpeshal quote tweets a post of his from last January, where he states that a “new batch” of original Xbox and Xbox 360 backwards compatible titles was coming at some point this year. Now in October, Shpeshal provides an update on his earlier claim, writing, “It seems some games may have been datamined, but sometimes OG and 360 games are tested for BC but don’t make the cut so I won’t list any games as to not set expectations.” There are still many original Xbox andXbox 360 games that are still not backwards compatibleso one has to wonder whether they can actually be used or not.
Many have responded to Shpeshal’s post looking for further insight, and to his credit, he elaborates partically on his claim. One user asked what Shpeshal thought of Xbox dropping the games on November 15, Xbox 20th Anniversary, to which he states, “That’s what I’d be expecting. (…) Having them on the anniversary would make the most sense. I don’t think the list will be overly big though.” Another user followed up on this response, asking how many games Shpeshal considers “big” in this context, with him saying that it might only be around 10 games. If it really ends up only being 10 or so games, it will be interesting to see what the ratio oforiginal Xboxto Xbox 360 games is.
While this service is undoubtedly quite a luxury for Xbox users, it is a bit troubling the lack of new information there has been about it. Fans have gone many months now without any new additions to the backwards compatibility library, so there is just reason to anticipate a drop of new titles, even if it’s only 10. Like Shpeshal and others have stated, it would make sense forXbox to drop the games on the 20th Anniversary, it serving as a vessel for celebrating Xbox’s history. Until then though, fans will have to wait and see whatXboxdoes.
