Sightings ofScream 6’s Ghostface resulted in numerous phone calls to local authorities, according to Sonoma, California police. Taking to social media, the department attempted to assuage residents and clarified that the individual in the costume was hired to promote the movie.

Scream 6will be the first in the franchise to move away from Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott, who will reportedly be absent from the final cut. Campbell’s co-starCourteney Cox is the only original cast member returning forScream 6,and Cox backed Campbell’s decision to step down from the franchise. Cox also promised plenty of Ghostface action in the sequel.

The Sonoma Police Department released aFacebookstatement of the sightings. “This morning our dispatch center received multiple calls for service regarding an individual standing at 1st St. E/E Napa St. wearing a SCREAM costume,” the statement reads. “This individual has been contacted and was hired by a company through Paramount to promote the new SCREAM movie. Thank you for everyone’s concern, it’s been addressed.”

Scream 6directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have previously revealed thatthis Ghostface, whoever they may be, is distinct from past killers in the franchise. For instance, thisGhostface uses a shotgun, while other Ghostface killers used an iconic knife to claim their victims. This Ghostface also appears to be one of the more dangerous ones. The trailers and previews have already shown the Woodsboro survivors on the ropes while fleeing the killer.

Ironically enough, this case of mistaken identity can be seen as a case of life-mimicking art.Several Ghostface killers' motivesresult from the killer becoming disillusioned with society, and several films in the franchise touch on the sensationalization of murder.A fictional franchise,Stab, exists within theScreamuniverse and satirizes Hollywood by having an over-the-top slasher genre based on “true” events. Ironically, a fake Ghostface causing alarm has been a minor plot point in a fewScreamstories.

Still,Scream 6’s marketing has been excellent so far. Much has been made ofScream 6’s New York setting, and plenty of marketing has focused on New York City’s famous subway system. Several stylish trailers and posters have come from the film’s press cycle, and it looks as though this entry in the franchise will be one that fans won’t want to miss.
