A decade old and theSonic Generationsmodding community is still going as strong as ever, constantly finding new things to improve, and experiments to try. One of the more prominent modders in the community has released a video of them controlling multipleSonicsat once, and the results are deafening.
There aremany mods forSonic Generationsout there, some of which being as ambitious as full-fledged games. The best example of this is none other than theUnleashed Project, a mod forSonic Generations that allows players to run throughSonic Unleashed’s exhilarating daytime levels, albeit with some slight optimizations to work withSonic Generations' mechanics. Notably,Sonic Unleashednever received a PC port so it has become a bit of a passion project by the community to essentially translate the game as best as it can intoSonic Generations. Other significant mods for the game include physics alterations, rendering improvements, and HUD modifications amongst other things.

Sonic Generationsmodder Skyth has shared footage of themselves controlling multiple Sonics at once while working on anUnleashedlevel. The video comes from a tweet by Skyth, with the only caption being a greatly appreciated “(volume warning),” as things get loud very quickly once Sonic starts moving. One ofSonic Generations' primary mechanics isSonic’s now-controversial Boost System, that when activated, Sonic will let out a yell and blast through practically anything in his path. Since Skyth has somehow formed a ring of 17 other Sonics around the primary middle one, when they activate the boost, the result is a bass-boosted “Yahoo!” followed by slight crackling as so much is happening at once.
At this moment, it is unclear whether Skyth intends on releasing this as an official mod. As a modder, Skyth has the ability to tweak many of the game’s inner workings without necessarily needing a reason, so this very well may be purely for their enjoyment. In a follow-up post, they recognize the nonsense of the original post, laughing and swearing that their done posting content like this for the time being. Naturally, the comments are filled with a variety ofSonic-based memes, from projecting hilarious scenarios onto the clip like a group offriends rushing to see theSonic the Hedgehog 2movie, to audio swaps replacing the background with really ill-fitting music.
Skyth’s tinkering inSonic Generationsmay have unintentionally spawned a gameplay idea for a futureSonictitle. Some replies point out obvious similarities to the Double Cherry fromSuper Mario 3D World, a power-up that continues to double the number of characters the player is currently controlling until they take damage. The main gameplay purpose of the power-up is to make platforming more difficult and stressful, as usually there is a pressure pad later in the level that requires a certain number of clones still alive for it to be activated. For use in aSonicgame, especially one with the Boost, though, a mechanic like that wouldn’t work very well.
Sonic Generationsis available on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
