Summary
The following contains spoilers for Episode 5 of Spy x Family Season 2, “The Plan to Cross the Border,” now streaming onPrime Video.
TheSpy x Familyanime has always put a strong emphasis on Loid and Anya,showing them as they encounter all kinds of obstacles in either climactic or hilarious fashion. However, the third member of the family, Yor Forger, often gets left in the dust, with very few of the major arcs focusing on her involvement.
The fifth episode of this second season, however, changes things up with the first big Yor-focused arc. Tasked with protecting a target from assassins while escaping the country on a cruise ship, this is not only the first serious arc of the second season, but the first to really focus on Yor as a character.
Yor’s New Mission
After receiving a call about a new quest, Yor and her boss go to meet the person in charge of Garden: the Shopkeeper.After quickly testing Yor’s reflexes, he tells her about her next job, which will be to protect Olka Gretcher and her infant son, survivors of the recently eradicated Gretcher crime family. The Shopkeeper puts them under his protection due to a favor he owed to the late boss, and the plan is for Olka to escape the country via cruise ship. He tells Yor to protect her until she is no longer in Ostanian waters, but Yor is worried that she’ll be away from her family for too long. The Shopkeeper explains that proper explanations for her absence will be provided, so she accepts the job.
While heading home on the train, Yor bumps into Yuri and they have a short conversation. Yor is surprised by Yuri’s maturity and starts wondering if she needs to continue working as an assassin now that Yuri is able to care for himself. It’s the first time all series that Yor has ever expressed such doubt, and it’s a side of her that we haven’t seen before.
Going On A Cruise
While out shopping, Loid and Anya notice a raffle being held, with the grand prize being a cruise ship ride. Anya wants to try and win the grand prize, but through telepathy learns that the contest has been rigged; the raffle runner has put the winning ticket on the side of the box where no one can reach it and plans for an accomplice to get the prize. However,Anya uses their plan to win the prize herself. When she later shows the prize to Yor, Yor is surprised to learn that the cruise they are going on is the same one she’ll be on for her assassination job. Yor plays it off as work for City Hall, though when Anya learns it’s for an assassination job, she throws a fit until the three of them all agree to go on the cruise.
Loid surprisingly gets permission from Handler fairly easily, and the three are soon off to board the cruise. Loid and Anya get on the ship separately from Yor, and while the two get busy exploring the ship, Yor goes to meet with her boss and the target, who has disguised herself as a blonde woman named Shaty Grey. After introductions, Yor is left alone with Shaty, who chooses to stay in the room while Yor’s boss takes her fake husband around the ship under the guise of City Hall business. The two get to know each other as Shaty tells Yor about the tragedy that has forced her to change her face and run to another country.
A Reason To Protect
After speaking for a bit, Shaty asks Yor if they could possibly go outside for a little bit of air,just so her son can feel better. Yor accepts, although she remains hyper vigilant for anyone that might cross their way. Finding her actions strange, Shaty soon learns that Yor’s family is also on the ship, and she wants to hide her job as an assassin from them. Shaty is confused about why Yor would be so worried about her family that only exists as a front, but Yor’s response clearly reveals that there is more to it than that. It’s clear that she cares about her family, and now she’s even reached the point where she’s considering giving up her assassin job to spend more time with them.
Seeing this, Shaty gives Yor a disguise so that she can take them out without having to worry about her family recognizing her. They take in the ocean breeze for a bit before heading back. Yor tells Shaty that she’ll do her best to protect her and her son, and a grateful Shaty tells Yor her son’s name: Gram. Unfortunately, a nearby listening device picks up these words, causing an agent listening in to investigate the various Shatys on board the cruise ship. Danger approaches as the episode ends, foretelling conflict in the coming episodes.
