Summary
Minecraftlooks very different in 2023 than it did back in the early 2010s, and an interesting video clip highlights the fact that it was somewhat more creepy than it is today. The open world sandbox adventure game still enjoys massive popularity and has come a long way over the last decade or so; in fact, it is one of the world’s most popular games, so it should come as no surprise thatMinecraftis still being updated. Just recently the game was rated for Xbox Series consoles, which do not currently have a native version of the game, so a next-gen release may be imminent.
While thecore mechanics ofMinecrafthave not changedsignificantly over the years, the game is visually almost unrecognizable compared to early beta versions. Players still have to build bases to protect themselves from a seemingly ever-increasing number of enemies that come out at night, collect resources, and craft items. TheMinecraftgameplay formula is one that is often used as a blueprint for other survival sandbox games. On the other hand, creative mode gives players access to an unlimited inventory of all items, allowing them to build some truly extraordinary structures.

A Reddit user by the name of iwanttodie95 shared a gameplay clip of “Better Than Adventure!” which is a mod that acts as a “fork” of the beta 1.7.3 version ofMinecraft. In the short gameplay clip, iwanttodie95 is inside what appears to be an early game improvised wooden shelter with only a furnace, crafting table, and a single torch. When they break some of the wooden blocks and step out of shelter, a Creeper unexpectedly falls down and explodes, which appears to take iwanttodie95 by surprise as evidenced by frantic mouse movements.
WhileMinecraftdoesn’t require a powerful PC to playeven today, the retro visual style of “Better Than Adventure!” maintains the aesthetic the game had when it was still in beta with shorter render distances and murky lighting. The old-style Creepers are completely silent until they start to explode, and this nostalgic clip will remind olderMinecraftplayers of the times when they were often the source of a jump scare.
There areother scaryMinecraftmods out there, but “Better Than Adventure!” is particularly interesting since it takes an older version of the game and goes in a somewhat different direction when compared to modern, officialMinecraft. One might be inclined to describe it as aMinecraftfrom an alternate universe.
Minecraftis available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and legacy platforms.
