Valheimis a fantasy sandbox survival game that was released in early access in February 2021. The game draws heavily from Viking imagery for the design of its game world. Norse imagery like this is a very popular source of inspiration for game designers, with games likeSkyrimusing it as an alternative to the more traditional vision of a fantasy setting. With so many games steeped in this Viking aesthetic, it’s no surprise thatValheimplayers are using the game’s building mechanics to make recreations of locations from other popular games.

FromSoftware also took some inspiration from Norse designs to makeElden Ring. This made the game visually distinct from the more European gothic settings found in FromSoftware’s other famous fantasy seriesDark Souls.

With bothValheimandElden Ringhaving similar design inspirations, it was only right that some ofElden Ring’s locations should be recreated inValheim. Reddit user Grrvvpp23 has done just that with the Church of Elleh, which is a location found nearElden Ring’s starting area in West Limgrave. The build renames the area to “Church of Valhelleh” and is a detailed recreation of theElden Ringchurch’s layout, despite the games’ differing art styles.

The player has had to cobble together some of the more specific details of the church using assets available toValheim’s building mechanics. The Site of Grace has been substituted for a glowing mushroom, and the merchant in the corner is clearly a collection of assets bundled together in an admirable approximation of theElden Ringcharacter. The Church of Elleh will be a familiar location for allElden Ringplayers as it is the game’s first point of relative safety, andthe merchant in the corner is where players can purchase the crafting kit.

The familiar church isn’t Grrvvpp23’s first recreation of an iconicElden Ringstructure inValheim, however. Looking at the Reddit user’s previous posts shows another recreation, this time of a walking mausoleum, whichplayers can use inElden Ringto duplicate boss remembrances. The Reddit user has also builtElden Ring’s lovable Jar NPC, Iron Fist Alexander.

A closer look at the Church of Valhelleh reveals that the player didn’t forget to add oneofElden Ring’s darker and more easily overlooked environmental details. That being the crucified NPC outside the door. Another interesting detail pointed out in the comments of the post, is that the location ofValheim’s Yggdrasil tree behind the church, lines up with where the Erdtree is positioned behind the church inElden Ring.
