Microsoft’s Xbox Series X is now available, giving fans the chance to jump into the next generation of gaming consoles. Millions of people around the world spent the last 24 hours playing their newXbox Series Xconsoles, but there are some concerning videos making the rounds online that could be indicative of a potentially serious hardware flaw, though the legitimacy of these videos has yet to be proven.
The videos, which are going viral on both Twitter and Reddit, show smoke billowing out of the top vents of Xbox Series X consoles. A video on Twitter by Arek Adamowicz shows some especially thick smoke coming out of the Xbox Series X, whereas another video, uploaded to Reddit by Hirsutophilia, shows some smoke but not an extreme amount. Now, we must stress the possibility that these videos have been faked, or that there are some mitigating circumstances to cause the Xbox Series X units in question to smoke. It certainly doesn’t seem to be a widespread issue, and soXbox Series X early adoptersshouldn’t panic just yet.

In his tweet, Arek Adamowicz tagged Xbox Polska, explaining that the smoking happened after only a minute or two of use. Adamowicz added that theXbox Series X was displaying the UIwhen the smoke happened, so it wasn’t even playing a demanding video game or anything like (assuming his report is accurate). Adamowicz asked if he could get a replacement Series X console from Xbox, and in a later tweet, said that the Microsoft team is looking into the situation.
Microsofthas yet to publicly comment on the Xbox Series X smoking videos. If both videos are real and not faked, it’s entirely possible that these situations are isolated incidents that won’t have any kind of real impact on other Xbox Series X owners, and so fans should keep that in mind.
Meanwhile, a Twitter account called XboxStudio has shown that the effect ofsmoke coming out of an Xbox Series X consolecan be replicated using a vape, and has called the videos of Xbox Series X consoles smoking “fake news.”
Regardless, the Xbox Series X smoking videos will likely remind fans of theXbox Series X overheating reportsthat came about prior to the console’s launch. In a since-deleted video, a YouTuber claimed that the Xbox Series X console became so hot that it was like a chimney. Another instance showed a reporter seemingly burning their hand on one of the Xbox Series X storage expansion cards. Other reporters spoke out against these claims, though, and official tests showed that the Xbox Series X actually emits less heat than the Xbox One.
