Considering the fact thatSkyrimhas been updated and released for a variety of consoles and platforms, some fans of the wholeElder Scrollsseries may be starting to wonder if the oldergames will ever get some love. There is a joke about howSkyrimcan be played on just about any electronicin existence, but the same can’t be said for any of the others.

The Elder Scrollsseries launched all the way back in 1994 withArena, releasing another title in 1996 withDaggerfall. Both of these action RPGs were DOS-based, and it wasn’t until the 3rd installment,Morrowind, which was for PC and the original Xbox in 2002, that fans got a full-blown “modern"Elder Scrollstitle. WhileMorrowindhas been ported to Xbox OneandOblivionto PlayStation 3, more modernized versions of the games have never been made.

That’s a real shame. There’s a reason whyOblivionretains a high score on Steam in spite of its age, and why theSkyrimmodsSkywindandSkyblivionare such popular ideas: fans all crave remakes of these games that they still love deeply.

For many gamers,OblivionandMorrowindwere the first involved, story-heavy, and long RPG-style games they ever played, and those characters, fights, and settings have stuck with them. All they need for many fans to rush out in droves to pre-order are some updated graphics and maybe some new content, like some of thethings that happened betweenSkyrimandOblivion.

The proof is available all over the internet that it’s time for these games to be remade. People from all over Reddit have formedThe Elder ScrollRenewal Project that connects volunteers together to work on mods that bringMorrowindandOblivionback to life inside ofSkyrim.Oblivioneven got a playable fan remasterthis year, completed almost entirely by a single modder, adding extra content and much better graphics.

With all the attention that these mods and updates have garnered, it seems like Bethesda must at least be considering remakes of these classic, fan-loved games in theElder Scrollsseries. But in a 2018 interview, DirectorTodd Howard stated that he didn’t want to seeMorrowindremasteredat all. “For something likeMorrowind, my personal preference is not to remaster it,” he said, adding that the classic look is “part of its identity.”

In spite of the work that would have to go into the titles, many players are ready and willing to play new updated versions. It’s definitely time for an upgrade to these two legends of the genre. However, it would take away some serious man-hours from work on the upcoming additions to the series, and fans may not be willing to wait for a new story in favor of getting older stories remade.Elder Scrolls 6could be the major shocking update to the seriesthat would make fans forget all aboutMorrowindandOblivion, but based on the community’s love for the older games, that’s highly doubtful.
