Ever sinceHollow Knighttook the gaming world by the storm with its challenging gameplay loop and fascinating setting, fans have been eager for more content for it - be it a small DLC or a fully fleshed-out new game set in the same universe. It took almost exactly two years after the release ofHollow Knightfor developer Team Cherry to share a reveal trailer for a sequel, calledHollow Knight: Silksong, this time with a different protagonist that strives to understand a new kingdom.Hollow Knight: Silksongplayers will control Hornet, the princess-protector of Hollownest, while she ventures through caves and forests to reach a mysterious shining citadel.
The premise ofHollow Knight: Silksongis quite enticing, and Team Cherry made it even more hype-inducing thanks to brief hands-on demo sessions at E3 in 2019. Because the first game was such amassive success among Metroidvania fans, the sequel is now one of the most anticipated games currently in development. How Likely is Hollow Knight: Silksong to be at Indie World?
Hollow Knight: Silksongis an ambitious projectnot only because of what Team Cherry wants to achieve with the game in terms of novelty and gameplay features, but also because it has to live up to the legacy of its predecessor.Hollow Knightwas unexpectedly good in the sense that players could not possibly anticipate how massive of a hit it would become over time and what sort of community it would build. On the other hand,Silksongis a game that has to bear the burden ofHollow Knight’s success, matching it or possibly even surpassing it.
Hollow Knighthas rapidly become a modern classicfor many players, and Team Cherry’s work onSilksonghas the potential of influencing even more gamers across the globe with the series' iconic music, storytelling, and tense fights. However,Silksonghas been lacking an official release date for a long time, and Team Cherry hasn’t been part of major gaming events over the past few years to reveal more about it. The fact thatHollow Knight: Silksongdidn’t make it to E3 last year is quite telling, as it means the game has yet to be perfected in a way that’s good enough to present it to the world three years after the reveal trailer.
Tomorrow’s Nintendo Indie World would be a great opportunity for Team Cherry to share a little something aboutSilksong, but the likelihood of this happening is pretty slim. ThisNintendo Indie World showcaseis a rather short presentation for a plethora of upcoming games, and it will feature around 20 minutes of content about which indie titles are coming to Nintendo Switch. Although Team Cherry is still considered an indie developer, andSilksongis the perfect indie game to talk about, the timing is not in favor of eager fans.
SinceSilksongskipped E3last year, the probability of the game being featured in a 20-minute showcase that’s not as big is very low. On top of that,Hollow Knight: Silksongbeing featured tomorrow at the Indie World would mean that all other games presented would end up being overshadowed by it, which is not ideal. Considering all the hype surroundingSilksong, it’s more likely to see it featured in a major event later this year, with a possible release date set for 2023.
Hollow Knight: Silksongis in development for PC and Switch.
