From a story perspective,World of Warcraft: Dragonflightcasts an overarching focus on the five Dragonflights, but there is one important thread from previous expansions that remained unaddressed until now. WhereasShadowlandsdealt with high stakes– a battle over the fate of reality itself –Dragonflight’s story is much more grounded by comparison, helping the Dragon Aspects reclaim a lost legacy and confront an ancient foe.
Since the end ofCataclysm, the dragons have taken a backseat in the story, having the occasional featured appearance such asWrathion inBattle for Azerothor Ysera inLegion. These appearances arguably were setting the stage forDragonflightover the years, as it planted the seeds of the Black Dragonflight being restored, as well as having Ysera undertake her journey to and across the Shadowlands. However, there is one background plot concerning dragons that strangely never got its due: the Infinite Dragonflight.

If recent datamining by Wowhead is taken at face value, players may just be getting an update on the timeline-wrecking villains inDragonflight– if not at launch, then certainly down the line. A new set of incomplete outfits was found in the files of the latestWorld of Warcraftbetabuild, each evoking the distinct color schemes of the five Dragonflights, with the sixth one instead bearing an unmistakable resemblance to the colors of the Infinite Dragonflight.
The Infinite Dragonflight is confirmed to be playing a role in the newly updated Uldaman dungeon, and their continued existence, as well as sudden reappearance in the story, begs a simple question of whetherDragonflightwill finally feature Nozdormu’s fall and subsequent transformation into Murozond. Though players have already seen Murozond’s end, they have not seen his beginning, and one can’t help but wonder if assuming the mantle of the Infinite Dragonflight’s leader would be a choice of sacrifice to keep the timeline whole, or if Nozdormu’s fall from grace will take a more sinister turn.
The current villains of the expansion appear to be the Primal Incarnates, and though ancient, elemental proto-dragons make for a spectacular foe. If there’s one expansion where the “Infinites” might finally get their due, it’sDragonflight. They have been fan favorites for a reason, facing off against the players sinceThe Burning Crusade, and allowingWorld of Warcraftto depict and explore past events through the Caverns of Time.
Dragonflight’s story in Thaldraszus already features players venturing into alternate timelines, so having Murozond and the Infinite Dragonflight emerge as the true villains over the course of the expansion would be a natural turn, should the reanimated Galakrond theory prove too predictable.World of Warcraftplayers will have their first foray into the new content on October 25, whenDragonflight’s pre-patchis expected to drop.
